if we tag judd he wont be able to run and carry, deliver to the forward line, set up players

last year was probably kanes worst year but looking at those stats he did ok on judd. seems to matchup well on him for some reason i personally dont rate kj that highly . but as i have stated in other posts judd is a champion without a doubt but even with kerr,embley,cousins,braun in support he hanst hurt richmond the way he has other teams & mainly kj tagging him

KJ will be tagging this year. That will be his role similar to his best & fairest win two years ago!

richo & bowden are already leaders at the club no need to give them a title, we have to look at the future and appoint a captain that will lead the club the next 5 years and will grow with the younger brigade newman & foley is a good choice imo newman is at the peak of his carreer and i think will be a very good mid with the captaincy

You don't just go chuck a guy like Newman into the captaincy.

Everyone is on Newman's case because he was captain of his junior club (I think). Fair enough. But that's no way near enough reason! Also, I don't think he has enough presence on the ground, or track record.

Granted KJ has not played well for us (except in a negating role, which he has done well), but he had a damn fine pedigree and form coming from Adelaide. That is why he got the captaincy.

Either give it to a star in the making (ala Carey) or the best player on the list (provided they are not brain dead). Leadership can be learnt, but you can't polish a t*rd. Not that Newman is bad, but is he gonna get better? I don't think so. We don't wanna have the next Vandenberg do we?

BTW, I want to see him do well. I just don't think he has justified why he should be made captain.

I find Newman a massive asset to the team, he is one of our better kicks, a play maker, does not turn over all that often and is a consistent rock in the back line that plays the game showing a lot more love and passion for the football club than a few of the other guys.

He is experienced, strong and an honest footballer, With a strong work ethic, and you barely ever see him with his head hung low. I see a worthwhile positive captain that could definitely give the boys a bit of spark as he runs the balls out of the back 50.

Who said it's only out of Newman and Johnson though?

I can accept your point about 'Johnson to stand down before it's too late' (though I don't necessarily agree with it), but it does not follow that Newman should be the next captain, unless you think that he is the *only* player with more leadership ability. And I doubt that very much.

I also think that you need to take into account talent, profile and public speaking skills. A captain is no longer just a 'leader of men'. He is (along with the coach) the focal point of the club.

There are more talented players than Newman. There are higher profile players than Newman. I can't vouch for his public speaking and leadership skills (and only those close to the club could IMHO).

I think Newman is a handy nuggety kind of player and I pick him in my best 22. But I think that there are better choices. For example, I think you could legitimately build a case for guys like Brown or even Deledio or Richo or maybe someone out of left field like Simmonds, ahead of Newman.

All Newman's got in his favour is tenacious attitude that we all love, and a background in leadership at junior level. We need way more than that.

Richmond will struggle!
Carlton will struggle aswell but don't carry as many players as richmond do for eg:

Tambling- dud
Symmonds - dud
Pfteffer - dud name to hard to spell
Johnson - captain (worse since matthew campbell)
Tivendale - dud

These players have been around long enough and have done nothing!
If richmond want to improve they need to cull these players.
