Hairdresser sues over high hair
Hairdresser Louise Ellis claims she strained herself while trimming the hair of a particularly tall customer.
The NSW Supreme Court heard that the injuries had left her unable to wash her own hair for more than a week.
Ms Ellis is suing her former employer, saying his faulty equipment and failure to provide height-adjustable chairs left her with constant pain in her back and right shoulder.
Ms Ellis said she had been forced to give up her profession, and was seeking damages for lost earnings as well as costs for medical expenses.
The court heard that hairdressers usually cut hair with their clients' heads at chest height.
But when Ms Ellis was working at the Rantzos salon in Sydney's Clarence Street in December 1998, she had to reach above shoulder height to cut the hair of a tall customer.
Ms Ellis claimed she had reported that the chair she was using was faulty but nothing had been done about it.
She told the court she felt a crack in her neck during the haircut, and has since experienced constant pain in her back and right shoulder.
"I've been unable to wash my hair twice a week like I used to ... I haven't washed it since last Monday, which I think is wrong," she said.
The court was shown video footage of Ms Ellis moving freely about a shop and driving a car, but she said she tried to disguise the extent of her pain in public.
When Ms Ellis stopped giving evidence to take two painkillers, counsel for the defendant, Geoffrey Watson, SC, suggested she was putting on a show for the court.
She denied it.
The case, before Justice William Windeyer, continues.
Don't know what others think, but this is just about the most pathetic thing I've ever heard. What IS our society coming to?
