This smug, just-out-of-school girl at my old work who'd pontificate about how she had a girlfriend and her mum was a judge at Fringe was a genuine idiot. One time she took over my shift and as usual didn't say anything, just stood there, and I go 'so do you want the lay of the land?' 'What?' 'The lay of the land... the way it is, what the go is...' and had to proceed to justify that it was indeed an expression. 'A John Steinbeck-sorta thing I guess.' 'Who?'

Then again this silly bitch didn't 'get' why the French liked some other girl over her English friend. 'Probably something to do with all those wars they had for hundreds of years, aye.' 'They're not in war you know, SA...'
