One time she took over my shift and as usual didn't say anything, just stood there, and I go 'so do you want the lay of the land?' 'What?' 'The lay of the land... the way it is, what the go is...' and had to proceed to justify that it was indeed an expression. 'A John Steinbeck-sorta thing I guess.' 'Who?'
