Adelaide rookie Rhys Archard today advised the club that he wished to terminate his agreement and return to Echuca.

Crows football operations general manager John Reid said Rhys, who has battled hamstring injuries throughout the season, was quite candid by stating that he decided the AFL was not for him.

The Club has advised the AFL and accepted his resignation.

It is understood Rhys has advised his SANFL club of his return to Echuca.

Archard was rookie-listed by the Crows last December after winning South Adelaide's best-and-fairest award.

He was never going to have a significant AFL career, if any, so IMO he's probably done the right thing by himself.

Good luck to the lad. :thumbsu:

He played some decent games at SANFL level. Bad luck to the Crows... I had not heard much about him this season.

I'm assuming he cant have a change of heart though and go to another AFL club next season if the option arises?

Right...

Why don't we give guernseys to guys that actually want to play footy? I saw him at training last week and although he wasn't doing much he looked totally disinterested.

Poor form by the Adelaide recruiting staff and Archard himself :thumbsd:

I've never had great faith in the coach we currently have as he doesn't inspire me at all and seems to be of the old fire and brimstone style.

That's exactly what the issue is. Pyman is an autocratic hothead and the players play in spite of him and not for him. I have spoken to a few players recently (won't name them for obvious reasons) and they find him very hard work and feel that he has no understanding of what actually motivates players to perform. He learnt his craft from Malthouse, but seems only to have picked up the bad aspects rather than the tactical and motivational nous.

Archard and Kenna will only be the tip of the iceberg, unless they move Pyman on.

I think you're being a bit harsh on the lad. He has given it a crack and was only rookie listed, so who did we miss out on that we would have elevated? AFL lifestyle would not be for everybody and I also get the feeling that his decision is more based on not wanting to be at South and also realising that he wasn't going to make it as a regular AFL player.

We agree on this.

First of all, we shouldn’t be putting 24 year olds on the rookie list. The rookie list should be for youngsters with big upside, not mature age guys who are 50/50 at best to make it. Gallman and Turner might not make it, but at least they’re young and have considerable potential.

Poor by both parties IMO.

This is where I disagree!

Firstly, the use of rookie list can be used in a number of different ways depending on where your club is in terms of contention! If you are a team like Richmond or Hawthorns of last couple of years, you pick up kids with some rough edges and some upside and try to mould them into good AFL players.

If you are a team in contention and going into next season with 2 players short because of long term injury then a sound strategy would be to pick up one mature player who could possibly give you a bit of depth in case the is a need for him to play!

Port Adelaide in their contention years have used the rookie list this way with great success IMHO. First there was Jaxon Crab that played 18 games for them during that year. Then there was Scott Borlace and Ben Hollands. All these were proven SANFL player with limited AFL upside but were selected in case the team needed another mature player to cover for injuries.

I think our strategy going into this season was solid considering the circumstances. We selected 3 kids and a mature player. Whether that player should have been Archard or someone else, thats another issue.

If we don't trade for an established key forward this year they I would like to see us select a mature key forward for our rookie list next year to possibly be a cover for KPP. Someone like maybe Chambers but use the other 3 spots on youngsters.

Disagree, sometimes things just don't work out.

The purpose of the rookie list is to develop a player and hope he develops into something.

Unfortunately he didn't, but thats life.

Like I said, good luck to the fella.

for once, i agree with you drumm

Considering it was such an incredibly deep draft this is disappointing. Rookie list picks were pretty much on par with third round selections of other years, I don't think it should just be fobbed off as nothing. There are low expectations on rookie listed players in normal years. From last years crop I expect a much higher success rate than normal.

I don't think I'm being harsh at all. Kids grow up around footy and it's their dream in life to play footy for an AFL club. Gotta feel sorry for the kids who try their guts out every week, only to be beaten by a jockey who obviously isn't passionate about his footy.

Didn't want to play at South? Switch clubs!

i would love to see us pick up a really raw SA lad, who can sit on the rookie list who plays as a forward. my problem is I don't know who the hell that would be, don't care how old he is - except i think chambers is a tad old

You are a douche.

Football = full time job/lifestyle/career.

Other full time jobs...people leave when they find they want another lifestyle or career direction.

Just because Rhys Archard didn't become what YOU wanted him to become, doesn't mean he has no rights, now that he is at an AFL club, to leave his employer and seek a new lifestyle.

Yes it is unfortunate, but its life. But footballers have their own lifes. Deal with it.

He could've waited another month or two. He was probably going home anyway. Now he's a quitter.

He was a professional jockey.

Who knows, he might have some cut off date to meet to become a jockey for next year again or something. I don't understand his situation, nor do you.

I just think people are getting a bit caught up here.
