Are people who oppose high density development selfish?

So because I need to move back to Sydney I rang my real estate to organise moving my tenants on.
Today I get an email pack from the real estate including a bunch of propaganda about a new apartment block that a "local action group" is seeking to stop building.

After looking at the design these apartments look pretty swank. not ugly "soviet style" flats as the ad's claims. Additional it cant destroy views because the only views in the area are of other houses its at least 5 blocks from the beach and the area its in is completely flat, so the only things they could possibly have a leg to stand on is increased traffic and business interruption during development. Such things are temporary really who gives a shit? There is one sticking point and considering this came from my real estate its really grating on me, Housing prices! According to the material housing prices will go down. Now if it doesn't affect views how would housing prices go down? The only answer could possibly be because who wants to buy a house when you could by a brand new unit for less then half the cost?

That got me thinking is this actually what most of the Nimby scum is really about? think about it, all this protection of shitty old "heritage" houses the size of shoe boxes that need constant maintenance (and look rather ugly) is it all just to restrict the amount of development and thus reduce the amount of available space to live keep housing prices artificial high? Does anyone actually care about the size of a building other then how it affects the value of their land? do they actually care about the "surburb" or just the mean house price of the suburb?

It just seem selfish to me to block the development for housing in a city that desperately needs more housing just so you can line your pockets. Can anyone actually make a case for why apartment complexes shouldn't be built that isn't actually about self interest!

So you pay $450 a week for a shoe box?

Worth it to avoid doing any yard work. Water some plants? Why don't I just build a 40,000 hectare commercial farm! Same amount of effort as far as I'm concerned.

case by case basis. I'm pro development but get annoyed when I see cheapo shit going up in good areas.

Anyone been to Delfin Island in West Lakes Adelaide? What the mother ****ing ***k? Primo real estate with river frontage, 1500m to the beach and 7km from Adelaide CBD. So what did they decide to build there in the 80s? Tacky, boxy, 80s style villas that almost look like housing commission.

I see a lot of good stuff and then I see a lot of profit making rubbish/eyesores that I shake my head at and wonder why the council allowed it to be built.

In a sense, you could say that about most forms of housing cheaper than the standard suburban block and brick & tile house. Noit just apartments, but alternatives like factory built pre-fabs have just about the same level of local resistance - because they'll drive down property prices.

I never thought I'd be into it but actually love it. In Vancouver they have to build things that way because of water and mountains blocking expansion. We own our condo and have plenty of space. I have two secure underground parking spaces with an extra room for storage. Gardeners take care of everything outside and make things look nice with seasonal flowers etc. I get things that I could never afford to have in my own house (basketball and tennis courts, sauna, spa, pool, games room). Shops, bars and restaurants are all walking distance. Over the road are parks, the inlet and forests - that's my backyard.

West Lakes is 13 kms from the CBD.
