Are 'premiership windows' a thing of the past?

5th, 6th and 7th were 10th, 14th and 15th last year
Both last years grand finalists look like missing the 8

Fair argument for most teams could win it (not mine this year obviously) in any year if things go right for them

The Pies still have basically the same squad they had before dropping down the ladder, and were able to add Daicos through FS. The 17th place finish was an anomaly. This year's North Melbourne side definitely wouldn't be able to replicate that next year for example.

Outside of the sides trying to rebalance their lists (Eagles, North) and sides allergic to success (Carlton), just about anyone could turn things around and become competitive in the space of a couple years by injecting elite youth into the side or getting a fresh coaching panel. 2012-2014 Dogs were shambolic (finishing 15th, 15th and 14th). Replace the coach for 2015 and suddenly they're making finals and are a 15-win H&A side in 2016 and win the flag. "Windows" are much more easily opened these days

Some teams capitalise and make the most of their chances and win multiple flags in a short period of time, aka Hawthorn, Geelong, Richmond, Brisbane because they had the list and structure to maintain their capabilities. Other teams piss away opportunities, such as the Dogs, Eagles, Freo, Pies etc and dont win flags/multiple flags when they could have and miss opportunities.

If you look at a few example clubs below to illustrate a point

Collingwood, West Coast, Port Adelaide, North Melbourne

Which of those 4 clubs can win a flag in the next 3 years, which clubs cannot?

Some clubs are in it and should be gearing up for a crack, the others mentioned aren't going to be the best team in that period and while on a technicality they are a mathematic probability, their focus is about building the list towards finals firstly.

That's the premiership window as I view it.
