Are we being proactive enough

Read the title as are we being provocative enough, so I'll answer that.

No we're not being provocative enough, need to take a leaf out of the cowboys book

nah, we don't need any of them :)

I know we don't know all the ins and puts behind the scenes, but it feels like we aren't being aggressive enough at the trade table. We clearly have cash to spend, and holes in our list, we need to seize the moment!
Thoughts?

Would help if the trade period had actually begun...

We went really, really hard at Aaron Black, think the club was a little taken back when he stuck with the Roos, it was a very attractive package put on the table.

I think we are being very proactive behind the scenes. Last year we looked a little silly publicly chasing players like Mitch Clarke, Travis Cloke and Brendon Goddard only to come away with nothing.

This year we tried for Buddy, Jack Riewoldt, Aaron Black, Jack Watts and maybe Jesse White.

We have the money available to pay such a player, however the Gold Coast and GWS are the only ones available to offer the real big bucks to secure a star.

I believe we have contacted all of the major player managers and they know that Freo is in the market for a key forward and have room in our salary cap. All we need is a player willing to move to Fremantle. The fact that we just made a grand final will make it easier too.

the whole thing just seems to drag on. Looked pretty sure we are getting J Pod and now 2 other teams are hunting him down. Felt like nothing was really happening last week (via the media and afl.com.au) but must be heaps going on behind the scenes.

I am pretty sure Bond said that he didn't expect to have that many trades and the club would concentrate more on free agent opportunities, which appears to be what has happened.

I am not sure what people are expecting - the whole KPF thing has been blown out of proportion but also context. The context is that Pav is there next season, structurally we like to play a KPF and a ruck / forward, and we have that so there is no structural issue currently. As far as I am concerned we almost one a grand final with that structure but had massive issues with nerves, so there does not appear to be a weakness (it isn't Western Bulldogs a dew years ago where they had no one).

The problem is when Pav retires, but the that is for the draft. A lot is made of the young player "learning" with Pav but the reality is more that Pav will get in the way of that young player getting games. The no stone unturned bit should be the drafting and training of a KPF that can do the job. To this end they need to look at the Irish, the Americans, mature age etc. and the development of success stories at other clubs (think Shultz, Sam Reid, Gunston, Black, Podsiadly) and what made those work over those that didn't.

What is the go with bootsma.
All american hero in yellow and blue.
Could mean that yeo is ours.

Can only hope you are correct - besides bootsma would fit in nicely with their other bargain trades of the last few years e.g. Oakley-Nichols, Bennell and Morton.

Apart from one hit with Darling, arguable that WCE have comp worst drafting/trade record of recent years (ignoring Dees who don't count as an AFL team :)).

Set up for multiple years of non-contention.

I agree somewhat. The problem isn't simply when Pav retires though. It's when he doesn't play. He's been just about the most durable player in the comp since his debut; he only played 12 games in 2013 and 'managed' injuries through 201... well he's 'managed' injuries forever.

I'm all for the KPF + R/KPF + special combination fried mid/hf/fp set-up when everyone is available. When that KPF is Clarke, Silvagni, Taberner or Mammoth instead of Pavlich though? Not such a fan. If Kepler wasn't out with a knee injury I would feel more comfortable, as he at least earns a modicum of respect from his opponent.

Kepler is injured.
Griffin is injured - the Sandilands/Griffin/Clarke combo isn't happening anytime soon.
Mammoth is inexperienced/learning.
Taberner is inexperienced/learning.
Silvagni is a defender.

We certainly shouldn't sell the farm for someone who may spend the majority of 2014 in the WAFL, but we do need a stop-gap. We can't afford to throw away the 2014 season simply because Pavlich is unavailable.
