Arizona pre-season for the Blues

The Carlton players will travel to Arizona for two weeks in November for altitude training as part of their pre-season campaign.

The Arizona training camp will commence in early November with the coaching staff being joined by 40 players for the two-week program.

We know we're heading over in November and 40 players will be heading off.
That takes up virtually the whole playing group at this stage along with the addition of a few hangers-on.

It can only be a good thing. Anything that helps improve our fittness and overall game play has to be worth trying.

Great news.
Makes sense football wise, including the majority of player.
Makes sense business wise, building relationships and partially funded.

2 weeks of running around the desert, or 2 weeks with a specialist kicking coach, wonder which way Levi would go??

Lasts years sand dune fest was covered by the sponsors, this years i gather will come from our never ending fountain of cash.
Read somewhere that a fair few corporates have been invited to join the trip.

Brynne has opted to stay in Melbourne due to fears that her Robbie Warnocks would explode at that altitude.

Apparently Malthouse really drove home the merits of Arizona.
Seems that the trip may also have been funded by sponsors to some degree.

Does anyone know what the program will be like for the boys?

Not really fussed, as long as they don't all come back looking like string beans ill be happy!

Pies and North both had pretty extensive video coverage of their trips. Especially North.

Yeah. Mountain runs and some boxing to draw a bit of blood.

What actually happens though?
Is there a pre-determined program. I guess Malthouse knows the ropes so I hope he also makes his way their and not rely solely on Wiley

Do the guys live on a mountain top for a couple of weeks?
Mick officially starts November 1st so you'd assume he makes his way up.

Not sure where they're staying but some of the players are already planning long drives to watch NBA games live with Mark Homewood our rehab guy (are long drives good for the body? :p)

It'll be a nice chance to get almost the whole group away and bond and it's most likely funded by sponsors so I have no real issue with it. They'll probably enjoy it more than Qatar too.

I know this has been discussed before both on this board and others but the main point is to set up a good fitness base to tackle the rest of the pre-season. Exercising at altitude increases the production of red blood cells which in turn increases the oxygen supply to the body.

The main query on it's legitimacy appears to be that the performance increases are only temporary at best when you spend a limited amount of time at altitude, the body adjusting back when you return to sea level.

I imagine club thinking amounts to 'if you can find the money why not, it can't hurt and it could help'.

Semi-Correct, the air in arizona has less oxygen concentration within in, so basically the bodies are breathing in air with less oxygen then what they would over here in Australia. Over time their bodies will adapt to this low amount of O2 and won't require to take in as much when they're working. Less reliance on oxygen = better fitness levels tada!

Sexist, demeaning and only marginally hilarious.

Season starts about 5 months after the Arizona trip. Will two weeks there really have an effect?
Personally I don't think so. As blue said, any improvements would probably diminish by the start of next season. Putting it into perspective, if you went on running program to try and increase your fitness levels say 5-6 days a week for 2 weeks, how much of an improvement will you experience?

The key point though is over time. Two weeks wouldn't provide any lasting effects back here would it?

You'd probably break down after the 4th or 5th day and actually go backwards.:D

Personally, I think Arizona is a waste of time and money, you can get specially designed altitude rooms which simulate the exact same low oxygen conditions where you can adjust the O2 levels, surely that's the most logical thing to do? I know Victoria Uni in Footscray have these rooms and bulldogs players come in every so often for a few weeks and live in there, it's pretty much like an apartment.

From what I've read and experienced, these are more beneficial for athletes that have 'one-off' events, such as a long distance runner in the olympics, they would go to arizona or a low oxygen room and live there for a few weeks, then come back down to sea level and compete in their event within the next few days whilst still possessing the benefits of the altitude training.

Not sure on the merits of this sort of thing. I think it's more about preparing players for preseason training, bonding and giving them a bit of a holiday away. Might also be a way the club feels they can completly control their lifestyles for a brief period too. I doubt the benefit gained from this trip will still be present in the players by the start of the season but if it allows them to train that little bit harder when they return home then so be it. I just hope we don't turn up lacking weight and strength this year like we did the last. If only they had this sort of thing in Whitnall's day.

Just a quick one, do Geelong/Hawthorn/Sydney do any of this sort of thing?

Firstly what's great is that most of the playing list are going, unlike Qatar where only half the list went.

Secondly the benefits are more about the conditions giving greater physical benefits in the short term... eg cardio.. 2 weeks doing cardio in high altitude is for example the equivalent of 4 weeks here... so it's like an extra 2 weeks of preseason training.
