Exciting Melbourne youngster Steven Armstrong is on the road to recovery, after he injured his right leg in the tragic Bali bombings, which occurred in October.
Armstrong, 18, had a skin graft to a wound on the back of his knee, which was the ‘size of his hand’, while he also had a cut to his foot.
Melbourne communications manager Mark Evans said Armstrong was remaining positive and looking forward to starting his second pre-season with the Demons, when he returns from Perth where he is visiting family and friends.
“I spoke to Steven last week and he said the skin graft is progressing well and while he still has to be careful, the reports are that he should be fine to start pre-season training shortly,” Evans said.
“He’ll probably be back in town the week after next and only miss the first week of pre-season training.”
“Emotionally he’s in good spirits and he’s really appreciated the letters and emails that he’s received through the club…but he’s a pretty well put together kid.”
Armstrong, who played 13 games in his debut year – including both finals, was selected at No.25 in last year’s National draft, after he was originally touted as a top ten draftee.
The Demons couldn’t believe their luck when he was still available in the second round and they subsequently selected the 2001 Larke Medallist – the best player in division one of the under 18 championships.
Armstrong won a National Rising Star nomination in round three this year and looms as an integral part of Melbourne’s line-up for the future.
Meanwhile, Evans also said recently retired Demon stalwart Steven Febey and delisted rookie David Robbins were both holding up well, after also experiencing the Bali bombings.
“I spoke to Steven as late as today and he is doing well and is now weighing up his employment options and David is looking to nominate for the draft and hoping to gain a pre-season with another AFL club,” Evans said
