I'm seriously thinking about joining th reserve , because I could do with a bit more spare cash, and I suppose it looks like a pretty entertaining part time job.

Anyone here ever had anything to do with the Army Reserve, or know anything at all about it? Any horror stories I should be aware of?

I don't know how the Australian Reserves are, but the US Reserves are junk.

I was out of the US Regular Army for a few months, and I thought I missed it. I didn't want to go back in, so I signed up with a reserve unit. It sucked. They were absolute idiots, and I got out the very second my time was up. I would have deserted before going to war with these complete morons. I've heard the Aussie Reserve is good.

Australians have had famously excellent Infantry since 1788. However, if you want to be a real soldier be a tanker. Imagine yourself in a Leopard:

That's a German one, but you get the idea. Good luck with whatever you decide.

But how would you be able to cope being away from mummy for a whole year?

Already away from mummy knakkers although it took me 23 years to do that.

My father finished school in the late 60's and was conscripted to go to Vietnam. At 18 he learnt more about himself than his University studies (that's what he tells me) when he came out of the army.

I think it's a good idea of doing a service in the army at 18. Would teach a lot of kids discipline and they would learn skills that would be used latter in life.

I think 18 year olds should consider military service. It puts some backbone in them before they are really 'adults.' However, I disagree with compulsory service short of an all out world war.

A 'draft' or mandatory service makes for a lot of crap soldiers. I have some measure of respect for nearly anyone and their opinions even if they differ greatly from mine. But there is absolutely no worse scumbag human being on the planet than either a bad cop or a bad soldier. Disgusting.

Peace,

You're right.
When someone goes to rob my place, I will need to know how to use my machine gun :D

You would be surprised at how many skills can be transferred to every day life. Logistics, managment (officer) and trades can all be developed in the army.

There is one problem with the army though - their culture.

This type of 'discipline' is fine to use on school kids (even then it is questionable), but not adults (unless they want it). I wouldn't have anyone talk to me like I'm a piece of shyte - regardless whether they are my superior or not.

Well, anybody in this country who EVER tries to take two years of my life (or 2 days for that matter) to turn me into another little tin soldier can go to hell. It's not going to happen.

Honestly, what sort of jackass actually SUPPORTS conscription??? It's not the 19th century, although I'm sure a lot of cigar smoking, pheasant shooting, fox hunting, sherry sipping clocks like Rohan and his blueblood buddies would love to send all the little boys to war for some entertainment, just like they did in the good old days when the Mother Country came knocking.

Compulsory?

Rohan. I'm sorry, but you're Nazi-style ranting has to stop, (Is that an over-reaction?)

Yes, let's force people to enter a brutal training regime, so that they can learn about themselves. No matter if you want to or not.

So, those who don't appreciate violence or even physical endeavour? What do they get? A year in Hell.

What about the disaffected youth who now has the confidence in his abilities to beat you to a pulp? Good, healthy anger channeling, that.

Give em a year in the reserve then spit them out to practice what you've taught them on the streets. Excellent.

Dude, there are some folks who i don't like sitting on a train with, how the **** do you expect people to go thrust together in an environment that's geared towards violence?

Good grief.

So you join up, if you thinks it's soooo good. What's that? Oh... you have a life. Hmm. Come to think of it, SO DO 18 YEAR OLDS!!!

Or have you forgotten that since you turned 19??

I had a friend who's dad was in the army. They had to have dinner every night at 1900 and had to wake up every morning at 0700. This guy was a freak. Everything had to be routine.

To coin the great Ron Barrassi. "That is the trouble with today's society, it's a bit soft. Afraid to get their hands dirty"

There is nothing wrong with a bit of hard work and discipline. From what I've been told the officers try to break you and treat you like a piece of shyte in their first few weeks.

Sounds delightful. Afterwards it's all Laura Ashley tea-parties is it?

And as a Blues supporter I think I can say the Barassi is a legend, but a legend with a screw loose. You kinda have to be to be a successful AFL coach.

This is fine if you want to be there. People generally don't respond to this type of treatment.

I think the level or how hard the army is a tad overrated by the general media and society. My father fought in a war setting and although it was a dramatic situation, he said some of the best times and mates were developed in the army.

Cool. The Army's a doddle. Let's go to war, then.

My uncle was in the army. I do remember my aunt and uncle and the family having to move from place to place every couple of years.

Both my cousins (one on each side of the famiiy) was in the reserves. One of my cousins was in the reserve while he was at uni, he doesnt do it anymore. My other cousin, who has sinced moved to Qld, was in it for quite a number of years now.

I think you need to be a disciplined kind of person to be involved with the army, my uncle is that kinda guy. But it all comes down to personal taste really, whether or not that is what you are into.

As for Rohan suggesting that all 18 year olds should join the armed forces, I am not so sure about that. Personally, if I had the choice I would be in the airforce if things had worked out, but such is life. :D

Just my humble opinion folks.

And hence why there are so many dole bludgers in Australia.
This is just not true.

You will usually find that people who respond to being treated like this are puppets who are easily exploited. There are much better methods of getting productivity out of subordinates.
