CHRIS Judd will captain Carlton if asked, although one gets the impression he certainly won’t lose too much sleep if he isn’t, when the Blues decide their leadership for this year.
Frustrated at his long road back to full fitness since leaving West Coast at the end of last season, Judd caught up with afl.com.au at the Blues’ Footy Wild clinic in Johannesburg, and he said leadership wasn’t high on his list of priorities.
“Do I want to captain Carlton? Look, I’d be lying if I came here with a burning desire to captain the footy club,” he said.
“But if the players decided they wanted me to do the job … it’d sort of be a bit of a slap in the face to them to say, you know, ‘Get stuffed’.
“So essentially it’s like the John Howard line, ‘I’ll be here as long as the party needs me’. It’s a bit like that.”
Judd is among a six-man leadership group in contention to lead Carlton in 2008, with many outsiders believing either he or Nick Stevens will earn the coaching panel’s nomination to the board in coming weeks.
Coach Brett Ratten said yesterday he hadn’t spoken to his star recruit about the role. Each member of the Blues’ leadership group will get his chance to show his wares throughout the pre-season.
Judd definitely won’t get his chance either in Saturday’s exhibition match against Fremantle in Pretoria or in the early rounds of the NAB Cup, with the champion onballer struggling to shake off the effects of an adductor injury.
He admitted he hasn’t recovered as quickly as he would have liked.
“It’s been pretty slow to be honest,” he said.
“I thought that by after Christmas I’d be up [to] 100 per cent sort of thing, so it’s been slow but I’m doing everything I can.”

Seems it's only a matter of time before it becomes official.

I had the feeling it wasn't quite "ahead of schedule" as what we're being told - fingers crossed he's in full work by mid February otherwise there must be a concern about his readiness for Rd.1 against Richmond.

According to Audus the CFC website would never mislead supporters......Juddy must be lyeing

I think Stevens has a real passion for the role, seems to have a real desire. Despite appearances Stevens seems to have a strong passion, is a genuine footy type and would make a passionate leader.

Judd may be a better choice at first glance, however all the benefits of Judd will be received whether captain or not. His professionalism, skill etc.

The combination of Stevens captain with Judd assisting seems to deliver more benefits that Judd captain and Stevens stiffed.

I 'LoL'd'

Seriously though you'd probably need him to be captain as. no offence, I"m sure he's the most professional at your club. Would probably be the most professional at any club really.

Well said and a good way at looking at it, i seem to be changing my mind daily on who should be skipper, today its Stevens tomorrow who knows, maybe Juddy can have it later on, maybe 2-3 years but then who really knows, only the club will truly know the answer, lets all just hope they make the right choice for the club moving towards our next flag...

Doesn't seem too keen for it. When I hear a bloke say

"I’d be lying if I came here with a burning desire to captain the footy club"

then that probably rules them out in mine eyes. I don't want Judd to feel obligated to captain the team, he has to want it.

Pulease!! Judd would probably be the best captain in the league, purely by onfield deads more than anything. Lets face it, you pick your best player to captain the side, they go and toss the coin, then they go and dominate in general play.

Its not a hard decision at all.

There's a lot more that goes into being a captain than just on-field.

I too would not want a captain who "Feels Obligated" to accept the captaincy role.

I would like our captain to be "honoured" to lead the club!

but having said that, this is an article by a reporter & we all know what reporters are like.....
I would rather hear it from the horses mouth so to speak.

I'm starting to think that Juddy and Stevens should become co-captains.

No co-captians please....its just BS having co-captains.

I still think Simmo is the only outside chance, he did a great job last year, but if the club is looking for profile he probably doesn't fit the bill.

I'd be very happy with Simmo, if not i hope he gets 1st vice.

Hmm, considering Im a fan of Judd as captain, I don't really like that article. It seems to me that he doesn't want it, but he recognises that if the players see him as their leader, he should be their captain. Would much prefer him be jumping up and down putting his hand up for it

I really don't want Stevens as captain to be honest, I still want Judd as captain, but if he really isn't keen, and its beginning to seem that way imo, I would love to see Kade Simpson get it. I have no doubts whatsover he would lead this club admirably. Could see him having a leadership style similar to that of Jimmy Hird

Judd should simply be captain.

He is the best man from the job, he knows what success is, and is a leader of men and should definately accept it if he wants what is best for your football club.

Surely if you have a leader/player of Judd's ilk, then you use it to your advantage. And his name has been put forth by senior players who have played a big role at your club for the past half decade.

When Judd speaks, younger players will stand up and take notice.

So if Judd said off the bat after being at the club for 12 weeks... give me the captaincy now, I want it, I deserve it... we'll all be much happier accepting it.

I doubt it, we'd all be saying he's an arrogant up himself tool.

I think Judd is being humble and stating his desire to be captain upfront to not insult a new set of team-mates he has not gone to battle with yet. But deep down in his heart I think he'd love to be our captain at some stage.

He only seemed to dread his role as captain at West Coast for 2 reasons.

1) Cousins was still seen as the real captain
2) He knew he wasn't going to renew his contract with Weagles when he was made captain, and it didn't sit right with him knowing that in his heart he would be leaving whilst captain of the club.

Hardly. All I want to hear him say is that he'll be putting his hand up for the captaincy, and be applying for the position. That's all Stevens has done and nobody thinks he is an "arrogant up himself tool"

With the fitness doubts surrounding Judd you guys would be better off picking someone like Nick Stevens IMO. Not much point having a guy leading the side who may well be struggling to make the sort of impact he used to have at West Coast. Judd may well get over his injury problems this season but he will still be well behind in terms of his fitness if the reports coming out in recent times are correct.

I'm speaking from the exerience of having Matthew Primus captaining Port in 05 when he was dealing with coming back from a knee injury and also having Tredders as captain who has struggled with injury the past two seasons. It's far better to have your captain being one of your best players.

At Port we don't like Stevens but it seems to me that from a Carlton point of view he's performed well and has hardened up considerably as he's matured. I haven't checked but I assume he is now injury free?

All that he would have had to do would be to come out and say that 'I would love to captain the Blues this year.' I just don't see how that could come across as arrogant.
