Well I played junior cricket with him at Melville, went to high school with him and then attended uni with him. He also played state cricket for WA before tranferring to Vic. You may wish to check your facts CHAMP.

Happy to be corrected, was led to believe he was in the NSW system before transferring to your state.

Was very impressed when I got a chance to watch him in the ODD match against Queensland, lovely action and gives it a rip, not a massive spinner of the ball but he's no hauritz or beer.

Has yet to bowl on a spin friendly wicket at first class level.

It's extremely unlikely 'cause he's only there from the 9th-16th, a week in which WA have no games and when there's a tour game in India in which there's a spot to fill (and i guess leaving doherty back here instead of playing in that game is worth discussing). It also allows them to pick another young spinner (eg Boyce, Zampa, Turner etc) for the first couple of Aus A games against the England Lions.

Don't they want him bowling in the nets as he actually turns the ball? At least that is what it sounds like. Bowling in the tour matches in India is definitely where Doherty should be. It's feels very scattergun and I'm not up for selection, the squad members must feel like they are on a knife-edge.

Nic Maddinson could score a ton in the next two weeks and find himself on standby. Thank god, Shaun Marsh is being old Mr Reliable in first class cricket just now.

Wasn't particularly spin friendly. O'Keefe just takes wickets on all pitches. Remember the seaming green top on which he took 4/80 against England for Australia A?

If it seams it spins.

If it seams it spins.

Sorry, what? The ball tends to skid across the surface of a grassy pitch, rather than gripping, reducing the amount of turn, plus the pitch tends to hold together better as the game progresses. There are obviously other factors involved (how firm the pitch is, etc), but grass is certainly a much better sight for a seamer than a spinner.

Of more concern is how is it that two quality left arm tweakers have left us to pursue opportunities in the West. Surely Holland isn't casting that big a shadow that there is no place for any competition?
Mick Beer was playing premier cricket for St Kilda, wasn't getting a look in because Jon "everybody think's I'm the next big thing though I actually haven't done anything" Holland was set in stone for the role. Mickey Arthur goes to WA, new policy of playing a front line spinner every game regardless of conditions and Beer has his opportunity.
He says he's loving it in Perth.

yeah, I don't get the Holland hype. He's handy in FC cricket but he's not at test level. But he's only 25 and will improve. Very handy ODD bowler though.

Jim Laker disagrees.

Jim Laker was a freak who could spin it on anything. So was Warney, who also didn't mind bowling on hard pitches and green-tops (in fact the skidiness you get from green-tops probably helped him, as did the bounce of pitches like the Gabba, WACA, etc). But you take your average spinner, and they'll have a lot more success, and get a lot more turn, on a dustbowl than a green-top.

he absolutely is. Holland has gone on two aus a tours, been called into the aus OD team a couple of times and pretty much gone to the centre of excellence at every opportunity. CA and CV love him.

it's mind boggling really... or at least i'm just not seeing it.

don't mind that agar is going on india for a bit of development as long as he actually plays that touring game they were planning on playing him, then it's probably best to send him back to get more shield cricket in.

he looks handy enough but i can only get so excited about finger spinners. we're crying for a leggy.

Why? All the best spinners in the world right now are finger spinners.

that's not exactly saying much though.

most of them are just playing test cricket cause they happen to be the best spinner in their country. if it wasn't for the value of variety most of them wouldn't be near a test spot... swann is high quality but hardly a great. herath is about the same but in a real purple patch. haven't seen enough of ohja to comment. will watch him with interesting in this tour. ravi ashwin will never be a big wickettaker outside of the subcontinent. sunil narine *may* have a future but i wouldn't be surprised if he just ends up a one day bowler.

anil kumble, macgill, mushtaq ahmed i'd take before any of those blokes and we haven't even got to warney.

the rest are very average except for saeed ajmal but he is just taking the piss out of us
