Assuming for the sake of this that the club know for a fact that Palmer is gone to GWS at the end of this year, what would be the ideal way to manage it selection wise?

One school of thought is obviously to NOT PICK HIM, as developing him has no obvious long term benefit to the club.
The negatives of this plan are :
1. Current performance of the team suffers. This also has the effect of reducing the likelihood of us make finals, which really should impacts on the development of every other player on the list.
2. Possibly reduces the compensation pick we will get for him.
3. It is gifting games to players who are not earning selection eg VB, Crichton etc

My feeling is we gain more as a club by picking the best team possible, and hopefully getting subsequent finals experience into the team, even if Rhys then buggers off to GWS or wherever.

What if Rhys isn't going to play for Greater Western Sydney and he just has an attitude issue?

I asked one of the older guys down the club if they have any issues with the younger guys and have to bring them into line, he said that they know what is required of them if they want to play at the highest level and if they don't make the grade they don't make the cut. Simple as that.

It's not the general public's right to know about minor internal disciplinary action because the media will make it far greater than it needs to be.

The club is bigger than one player and everyone is on the same rules, a rising star doesn't mean you get a free pass and if he's not done what it takes to earn his place in the team he shouldn't be selected over a "lesser" player who has.

Assuming he is going then to put any development into him will only benefit the opposition. The compensation is decided on the value of the contract he signs with GWS, we won't lose anything by playing him at East Fremantle with his best friend Chris Masten.

It would be more valuable to play Mellington in the forwards this year than Palmer, Rhys won't be the difference between a win and a loss so he won't drag the team over the line into the finals, not this year.

Harves said earlier this year that if a player of his had signed he wouldn't withdraw them from our best 22 if they deserved their spot - not in as many words though. Although it's likely he's going his exclusion would be more the result of his attitude and willingness to work on problems with his game rather than having simply signed. Harves isn't that petty.

I won't miss Palmer at all. An appalling kick. I've seen country league footballers in boardies and Saucony boots who can kick better under pressure. Palmer has also lost his ball winning skill, it seems.

Not in our best 22.

A terrible kick who finds his target more often than Pav,an Fyfe do.
Hasnt lost his ball winning skills at all, has no trouble getting it when he is in midfield.

Maybe not in our best 22 when no injuries but currently very easily best 22 and given a whole game in midfield would easily rack up the disposals.

I thought we just had a thread on this

Yep, what I was trying to get at was, what is the consensus If you assumed he was going. ie As coach would you play him or WAFL him?, which approach benefits the team more as a long term strategy

That's completely absurd. I certainly don't see Fyfe as a notoriously bad kick. Pavlich's form slump is just that - a drop in confidence and a drop in the quality (and perhaps quantity) that surrounds him. Pav is a much better kick, undeniably. Even this season, Pavlich is kicking much better than the consistently woeful Palmer.

Yes there both much better kicks an can do amazing kicks
Yet the stats say Palmer hits his target 70% of the time.

Last time i checked Fyfe an Pav hit their targets 60% of the time.

im of the opinion that our season is now over, and rhys is clearly leaving.... so harves should make the statement and drop rhys for the year, and under no circumstance bring him back. if you dont want to be here, fine, GTFO, but dont give him his match payments, make him dwell in the magoos.

yeah well going of the last couple of years, that is because rhys has gottten the ball 50% less than pav and fyfe, and handballs 90% of the time

Harvey's handled this poorly. Playing him as a forward benefitted neither party.

true, if he was going to play him, play him in the middle, if he wanted to make a statement, then leave him out all together..... i think he has finally caught on, and i doubt we will see rhys again

Just utter dribble.

sigh, must we always clay? ;) ok, if it becomes clear that a. the team will not make the finals (which admittedly may be a little premature, but im of that belief) and b. rhys has internally signalled his intentions to leave.... what should we do? i dont see why we should play him, id rather see other, committed fremantle players get the nod

but if its true his stats this year effect the compensation, surely its best we play him where he will deliver the most output.

Its not like the usual deal with trading to a club where they can only offer what they have.
Its a free pick from the AFL judged on what they feel is fair.

They will see 1 good year followed by 3 yrs with barely any games an crap stats.
An give us crap compo.
Play him midfield see if he can rack up 25 a game an we might get a better deal from AFL.

even if he plays 10 good games from now on, do you really think we will be adequately compensated? wont happen, no point relying on a fair deal. if he doesnt want to be at the club, then he can improve his skills at the gummies

Really annoys me when people dig into Palmer, when nobody know what is going on with him. I find it extremely hard to believe he has attitude problems when he is one of the fittest blokes at the club and goes at every contest as hard as Matty DeBoer. It shows his dedication to the sport and the club.

He has had absolutely 0 chance of providing results this season, the weakest part of his game would be his marking, yet in the few games he is played we have played him off a HFF. For christ sakes Harvey at least give the kid a chance to prove himself, throw him in the midfield for a whole match and see what he provides. Perfect chance to do so in our next two games.

We give ****ing Zac Clarke more midfield time than we do Palmer, it's becoming a joke and the only conclusion I can come to is that there is a riff between player and coach.

If Palmer does go to GWS next year and has been signed for some time already I will be righteously pissed off at Harves for the way he has been treated.

Yep pretty strange that we can play a guy in midfield whos only job is to go up as the 3rd man up at stoppages.

Nobody can say Zac offers more around the ground or defensively than Palmer could.
An for those that said Crowley was tagging Scully on the weekend they are listening to the idiot commentators i dont think i ever saw Crowley lined up against Scully.
I saw Zac lined up against Scully on the wing in a few stoppages.
I saw Hill lined up against Scully a few times.
I saw Barlow up against him.
It seems Scully was the guy we chose to just go head to head with while maloney an trengrove copped the tags.

Zac getting games in midfield before Palmer has to be proof theres more than just trying to teach Palmer a lesson.

Good point on 2 fronts.
Let palmer play midfield.
And WTF is Zac doing in the midfield

That doesn't necessarilly mean a lot. Carey and Cousins always put in on match day but didn't do the right thing by their club and team mates.

That would mean that he signed before Christmas, so why be pissed at Harv's ?

Palmer could not play for the rest of the season, and our compensation would not change. The compensation is determined by a formula, no feeling involved.

The more I think about it, the more confident I am that we will get an end of 1st Rd selection for Palmer. I hope we can trade that back to GWS, along with another player, for Jaeger. I think we'd have a bunch of players we wouldn't want to trade, leaving that player to come from the likes of Clarke/Duffield/Johnson/Ibbotson.

I have to say this is starting to really piss me off too.
I would really like to see Palmer start on the ground, in the middle and play most of 4 quarters there doing nothing but fighting for the hard ball.
