Just wondering who people prefer to draft...
eg.
NicNat is an athletic freak with good football skills
Rich is a footballing freak with above average athleticism

Despite the pain in saying it...Richo is an athlete, not a footballer (doesnt stop him being a gun)...similar to Buddy.
Pendlebury is an athlete too.

Jon Brown, Daniel Kerr and Shane Tuck are prime examples of footballers.

So...do people want athletes or footballers predominantly?

(Btw as a side not...you sometimes get freaks who equally good at both, ala Ablett, Judd)

Apologies if similar threads are abundant

A dud footballer is always better than a dud athlete. So footballer for me if you had to chose one or the other.

And cho is definitely a mixture of both Cormick.

JON is an athlete, Cotchin is a footballer.
Gourdis is an athlete, Thurstfield is a footballer
Howat is an athlete, Edwards is a footballer

I know who I would prefer

Bit better comparisons.

Just because Richo can't kick doesn't mean that he is not a footballer, the bloke is the best contested mark in the afl. A footballer is not always about perfect skills.

Greg Williams was just an ordinary kick, Tony Shaw's skills were below average yet they are 2 examples of pure footballers, neither were athletes.

As for my 2 bobs worth, you would take a footballer every time

Throw in Paul Broderick as a prime footballer-nonathlete. Sam Mitchell as well. Nathan Foley.
Clubs are too intent on drafting Olympians. I'd rather someone who can find the pill and dispose of it properly.
Our No 1 achilles heel during the past 2½ decades has been too many players who turn the ball over. And as I watched the game last week from the terrace at Footy Park, I realised we're not getting any better.

Footballer every time. Greg Williams was a great kick, either foot, just not a long one. Shaw was a good kick over 30 metres.:p

Good clubs with good coaches can turn good athletes into good footballers. Richmond is not one of those clubs. That's why I laugh when some posters here bang on incessantly about certain kids on our list...that ain't our main problem. Until we fix our issues with coaching and development (EDIT: and our "leadership group") , the onfield issues will arise time and time again regardless of who plays for us. At the present we could turn Geelong & Hawthorn's lists into a bunch of also-rans.

Spot on!

You have clerly identitfied our problems and articulated it brilliantly!

Well done!

Yeah, I realise hes a gun footballer, but I think it has more been his ability to run 15km a match, rather than what he does with the football, that make him standout as one of Richmonds greats

He's the best mark I've ever seen though.
Aigh, thats true.
But hes a gun, youd expect him to be able to do both well (as Beaver said), but take the difference his marking is from everyone else away and hed still be a very good player...take away the difference his athleticism and ability to get to every contest is over everyone else and I think hed only be a good player, not a star.

But I can see how ya's think hes evenly mixed with both

You look at the the draft...how many of them have stories like...."oh i was playing basketball up until i got drafted....or he couldve played cricket for australia...on the state baseball team"

fact is now

TO GET IN THE DRAFT YOU HAVE TO BE AN ATHLETE

clubs dont want footballers to teach athletecism....its too hard
its easier to draft athletes and teach them how to be footballers

plus if everyone is drafting the athletes then you arent losing anything by drafting them as well...

the age of the footballer is over...the age of the athlete is in full swing

Yeah? Tell it to Jimmy Bartel. Tell it to JON! You're talking about sportsmen, not athletes. Size, speed and strength have always separated those who can play from those who can merely play. Awareness, hand-eye coordination (skill) can be improved to an extent but are also innate talents, and will always separate the great players from the athletes. Yes, some blokes who are better 'footballers' will miss out in favour of guys who can run 100 in 11 seconds or whatever they test them on, but Greg Williams would probably get flicked by two clubs again today and he'd still prove them all wrong.

I remember an article about John Kennedy when he went to draft camp. He said they evaluated the kids in 10 areas:

'What is your 20m time?"
"What is your vertical leap?"
"What is your problem-solving ability?" etc.

He said there should be a question 11 -
"Can you play football?".

Bwahaaahaaaaa.......ahhh you gotta luv tigerheads and how they view their own....this is as funny as the last time I had a laugh when Hyde was being talked up as being on the verge of being elite...
No wonder we are a laughing stock to the rest of the comp. How the **** can you even contemplate lobbing Tuck into the same bucket as the two super stars you mention? Like ****ing get real dude.
Tuck is an average footballer who has to try as hard as he can to be average. Anything below his absolute best fades into him being useless.
The others can play at 60% and still affect a game. Thats the ****ing difference. ;)

Did I compare them?
Did I say Tuck was in the same class as them?
...No I didn't...

So what's your point?
Do you dispute that they're footballers more than athletes or are you just having a go at Tuck because you can?

first off if you are going to lob his name next to two out and out superstars, you yourself are making it easy for me.

Secondly, your simplistic view of the footy world is just that, simple.
Its just not as simple as footballers v athletes. Because as we very well know at tigerland, we think we have footballers, and we think we have athletes but we cant really work out which is which and we end up with 20 years of what we have had. prime e.g. Shane Morrison , now was he a footballer or was he an athlete? take a guess and i know you will be wrong and you know why too. ;)

How many players do Geelong have currently with bad skills who can't play football?

How are Geelong going at the moment?

How many non-footballers did Brisbane have 2001-04, Essendon 2000?

Above puts any questions to rest.

Cogga you ****wit. You don't get it. You're wrong. Always. You are always incorrect. Nothing that comes up next to your name makes any sense, and yet you have this unbelievable arrogance. You're a sad man, you're a ********, and I don't have enough adjectives to describe you.

He said Shane Tuck was a footballer. Which he is. He's not a great athlete, he doesn't jump 10 metres in the air, but he plays football and is good at it. Cormick never even insinuated he was in the same league as those two players, yet you pull your bullshit out of your arse to have another go at him. You poor, poor man.

What he said!

I was gonna reply to it but I couldn't make sense of what he said

Btw...to the bloke who mentioned John Kenneddy and the one who mentioned Geelong and Brisbane...great points, and I agree!

The club that secures NicNat with R1 pick will regret it...There is NO way that a side can be built on a tap ruckman, on any of the highlights seen of this kid, it's all about this amazing ****ing leap....If I wanted that Id get a mini me of Serge Bubka...I wanna see pack marks, monster kicks & bags of goals. Im glad we arent the ones with the finger on the trigger at the draft table , will be an anxious wait indeed for some:rolleyes:
