Please explain what this means and why its a reportable offence.

I would have thought that it is pretty obvious. It is when a player attempts to trip another but for some reason it does not connect and he is not tripped.

The AFL does not like tripping because it could cause a bad injury and as a result if someone has the intent to trip another player but did not achieve their goal they can stil get reported.

Well why not attempted striking??

I think they can do that as well but with the amount of punches player's throw each week that do not connect they would have to report about 20 a week.

What I dont understand is the fact that atleast 2 west coast players got free kicks during the match for 'tripping', yet lynch was the one reported for 'attempting' to do what the others did. I guess the others did it with their hands, mmmm a bit bizzare and no I don;t think any of the adelaide players should have been reported for 'tripping' they were just ankle taps.

How can a player get reported for attempted tripping when later in the game there were a couple of successful trips, that just recieved free kicks?

Tripping by hand isn't a reportable offense.

As far as Lynchy case goes, it was pretty obvious he realised he had swung his leg out and sort of pulled out of it then gave himself a serve, will be interesting to see what happens. Either withdrawn or a reprimand probably.

Its a fine line to suggest that anything Lynch monster does on the paddock is calculated. He is a 110kg lump of pure heart and little thought.

Haha Lynchy is great value, most probably in the top 10 dumbest players ever to play football. Definately a keeper, for the supporters.

I don't think he's that dumb. Did out-smart an adelaide defender today, that goal was fun :D

Actually, tripping by hand (and attempted) has also been a reportable offence for the last 5 years.

Attempted striking is a reportable offence too, as is attempted kicking.

how will they rate it?

impact: none, 0 points
head or body: niether, 0 points
reckless or deliberate: attempted, 0 points
in play: in play, 0 points

level 0 charge, total 0 points, equates to 0 weeks. will get a repremand if he accepts a guilty plea

Tripping not recognised; but why not.

The season ending injury to Chris Tarrant concerned me. (Before you label me as a Freo supporter or a Woods supporter...I barrack for the Bombers).
Essentially, Tarrant was tripped (and in the process copped a season ending injury) by a player sliding in low in a dive to get the ball. Tarrant gets tripped by a sliding body. Not a Fletcher gadget leg, not a rugby ankle tap by hand; but by a 80kg body and at quite some speed.

Was Tarrant tripped over? No doubt. One moment he is vertical, and the next he is forcibly knocked over by contact below his knee.
Was Tarrant hit by a blow that caused a season ending injury. Yes.

So, why no report?
And why no free kick for being tripped.

This is a serious issue developing in the game. More and more in the finals we see bodies diving at the legs of other players. The Selwoods of the world have worked out that they stand to get a free kick in diving at legs, through creating head high contact. To me the diver is the initiator often, he should be penalised for tripping.

Bodily taking the legs out is not tripping, you tripper.

Speaking of trippers, step right up James.

Thanks for the response Jeebs.
It caused me to reflect on whether I had in mind the correct infringement in the case where Tarrant had been caused a season-ending injury by the player who dived at his legs and caused the Tarrant injury.
A good question you raise. Is it a trip to bowl someone over by diving at their legs below knee level?

So, I had a quick look at the Laws of AFL.
Reprinted here is a relevant couple of parts

15.4.5 Prohibited Contact and Payment of Free Kick
A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player where he or
she is satisfied that the Player has made Prohibited Contact with an
opposition Player.
A Player makes Prohibited Contact with an opposition Player if he
or she:
(a) makes contact with any part of his or her body with an
opposition Player;
(i) above the shoulders (including the top of the shoulders
or bump to the head); or
(ii) below the knees.
.....
(h) trips or attempts to trip an opposition Player, whether by the
use of hand, arm, foot or leg;

On my reading of this rule (15.4.5<a>[ii]), contact with a player below the knee is an infringment, and Tarrant should have received a free kick at least.

Happened to Masten earlier in the year.

Was playing well, McPhee dived in on the ball, ran into the legs of Masten, got his legs caught underneath him, tore his PCL.

McPhee got a free kick from it aswell.

Doing shit like that ends your season, and can end a career. It's dangerous.

Re: Tripping not recognised; but why not.

Attempted tripping is a rule that only applies to Dustin Fletcher. Everyone knows that. Like this year when they suspended him for tripping by hand, a rule they'd abolished several years earlier.
