Ianni Perriopoulos or Tony Hatzimodra perhaps? :p

Did the Greeks have alot of players out?

I propose that at all future Australian sporting events the crowd should have electroduces attached to certain body parts before entering the stadium. Then whoever starts the "Aussie, aussie oi oi oi" chant should be given a 1000 volts in their trouser region.

Never heard of any of the Greek players so i can't answer that one.

As for that bloody oi, oi, oi chant if that becomes the norm come world cup time i will just turn the sound down.

94 000 at the game would have Andrew & friends looking over their shoulders right at this moment.

Noddy, they'll get a very similar crowd to the SOO rugby game in Melbourne this year, will that have Andrew looking over his shoulder?
I have stated on other boards that I have been hearing about soccer taking over in Aus. since I was about 6 years old. That was over 45 years ago ( sad, very sad ) and I'm still waiting.

Soccer had a chance back in the 70s when Aussie football was somewhat stagnate, but the constant nationallity conflicts made sure that would not happen back then.

The A-league will never be strong enough to take over AFL, so hence soccer (which is played during our summer anyway) will never be a threat.
Rugby League also will only dominate in the two states it does now and will never be accepted down south and west, hence AFL likewise up north.

The status quo will remain for a long long, long time. :thumbsu:

What a snore fest.

Seriously how boring is soccer as a sport?

I have an interest in the Socceroos doing well at the world cup, I wish them well, but I couldnt sit and watch that game for more than about 10 minutes at a time. Theres about 5 minutes of action every 90.

You're probably right in that regard but if Andrew doesn't take note he should move on himself. :)

But what i do know is that young kids in my city are turning away from Aussie rules toward the round ball game in droves especially in the primary schools.

And that is the real issue. Not this, soccer is summer sport, Footy is winter sport. When its all said and done that doesn't matter.

What matters is the participation rates amongst kids and clearly Soccer is having a healthy boost there while Andrew rolls out the participation figures for AusKick which tells us sweet :D:D:D:D all.

If AFL don't take this threat seriously, they will feel the pinch down the track.

Yep, I see kids kicking soccer balls around every where ( brings tears to the eye ) I think one of the main problems is the lack of male teachers at primary schools. When I was a kid male teachers coached us to play footy, but now there wouldn't be too many women teachers who would take the kids for a kick. However those same women teachers can take kids out kicking a soccer ball, much easier.
In Queensland it seems the kids play soccer at a young age and then when they are twelve or thirteen switch to Rugby, League or Aussie rules. Naturally if Australia start doing well at soccer on the world stage, perhaps those kids won't switch.
A huge amount of cash, coaching etc needs to be put into primary schools, by the AFL, if the code is to remain strong.

They rested their captain for the first half but apart from that pound for pound that lineup was arguably stronger than the one that fluked Euro2004.

As for Australia, no Kewell, no Cahill, no Aloisi, no Schwarzer.

All said though you can never read too much into friendlies, let alone pre-WC ones when everyone is mindful of not getting crocked and missing the show.

Fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion, but what I don't get is most of the people who say 'soccer is boring' usually love test cricket - where you can go overs on end with next to nothing happening bar a single here or a no-ball there.

Has anyone in this country ever tried to sit down and watch two other nations in a Test? You last 5 minutes before you're woken up by a ticket inspector 24 hours later in Gawler.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the game per se - just strikes me as odd that the usual anti-soccer moan is "boredom" when test cricket is so revered here.
