Good work by Fairfax. The conscience of a nation.

Shame on all of you who have a bbq on Australia Day.

As the Prime Minister and premiers staunchly defend our national safety record, they unwittingly reinforce the perception of racism.

Another example of government spin gone tragically wrong is the latest Australia Day Council advertisements (see The Age, page 18, last Saturday) urging us all to barbecue like never before. ...One can only gasp in horror at the meaning this might have for people of Hindu faith - this is tantamount to saying throw another sacred cow on the barbie, mate.

conflating a few issues, clumsy article, poor choice by editor for opinion page

I would happily concede that narrowly channeling a bbq as some symbol and edifying pursuit is thoroughly stupid. But really, don't see how you conflate the rant, and have some confluence of hinduism, bbq, Australia Day. Dare say, this guy is criticising such tenuous nexus.

Chops and sausages = lamb, not beef. So how exactly is the ad offensive to Hindus?

There's a real issue somewhere in there with regards to the way Indian students are being treated. But of all the articles addressing the topic, this is by far the worst.

I had an interesting discussion with a psychologist that once taught media in high schools who did a study of The Age vs the Herald Sun in relation to intellectual capacity and literacy.

The conclusions of her findings?

The Age is aimed at the 11 year old demographic.

The Herald Sun is aimed at the 8 year old demographic.

If Greg Day bothered taking a walk down the Yarra or around Albert Park Lake near his home of St Kilda he'd notice that our exotic immigrants have taken up the free public BBQ cause with relish. I've even been up north and seen the BBQs surrounded by hijabed Muslims. It's just a hot plate Greggy you put whatever you damn well want on it.

Daily Telegraph website is quoting illiterate pubescents from a Facebook group, so it's a bad day for media all-round...
