Since we're getting to the business end, we may as well keep track of the Aussies still left in the various draws (I at least am interested).

Women's Doubles
Renae Stubbs is still in the semis with her partner, Lisa Raymond (USA). They're seeded sixth, and play the Williams sisters (second seeds).

Boys' Singles
James Duckworth plays #2 seed Gianni Mina in the last QF today.

In the other half of the draw, Sean Berman has made it through to the semis and plays Hungarian sixth seed Martin Fucsovics.

Boys' Doubles
Jason Kubler and Ben Mitchell play the Dutch pair Eleveld and Lupescu in the semis.

Men's Wheelchair Doubles

Ben Weekes and his Swedish partner Stefan Olsson play the Dutch number one seeds Scheffen/Ammerlan in the semis.

Women's Wheelchair Doubles
Daniela Del Toro and her British partner Lucy Shuker are #2 seeds and play Kruger/Sevenans in the semis.

Crap day today. Everyone lost except Del Toro, who progressed to the final.

She and Berman in the Boys' Singles semis are the last ones standing,

Berman almost took out the Juniour boys. Maybe he is a prospect. Actually it was good to see a lot of the Aus juniour boys won a match or two.

Can we turn this into the Aussie Watch thread for the whole year?

If so:

The main draw for the $50K Challenger in Dallas has been released.

I thought Guccione was on the Entry List, but apparently not. Nevertheless, Carsten Ball is seeded second and has a pretty good draw. Will be interesting to see if he can build on a good performance against Verdasco, particularly against guys like Witten or Dimitrov if he can find some form.

And yes, Mark Philippousis makes his return against fifth seed Michael Yani. He was a direct entry through his protected ranking. I don't think he'll beat Yani, but it'll be interesting to see how he goes in his return. Hopefully better than Mario Ancic who lost his first match back last week.

Guccione is still injuried and won't be back till at least March.

Ball is incosisant but I hope he can use his solid performances over the summer to give him confidence to well back in these challengers. if he does well enough, getting main draw direct at the rest of the Slams is entirely possible, defending those LA points, well that's where his ranking will take a dive.

Can'tbelieve Mark is giving it another go, as I said in another thread, he looked fairly slow in that Champions Tour tournament he played, can't see him doing anything really.

There's also a $50K challenger in burnie, Tasmania next week with a ton of Aussies playing as usual. Good opportunity for someone to get some nice points.

Also got hitched in his time off to a very attractive young lady.

Yeah, and I think Klein is defending points from winning it last year? Either way, if he continues his form he's gonna fall well out of touch with the top 200. Tomic qualified and plays King-Turner.

Peter Luczak gets Starace in the first round of Santiago, which is an OK match but Starace is decent enough on clay. Pretty shoddy draw really, and the type of tournament Gonzo has been carving up in recent years.

Yep, Klein won that last year, watch the racist lose his ranking.

Luczak has had a few tough battles that he has lost with Starace on chalengers so this will also be a tough one. Hope Pete continues to play the tennis of his life like he has because it's winnable but very tough.

Yes, Guccione has done well for himself

It's been a pretty good week for the Aussies so far. Our lone ATP representative this week was Peter Luczak in Santiago. He beat 8th seed Potito Starace 7/6 6/4 in the first round, and then qualifier David Marrero 6/3 7/6 in the second round, before losing to 2nd seed and world no 33 Juan Monaco in 3 sets in the QFs, 6/4 3/6 6/3. Good start to the South American claycourt season for Luch. It would have been great if he could have beaten Monaco though, as Joao Souza, a Brazilian qualifier, was waiting in the semis. Obviously Souza would be in some good form, but it would have been a great opportunity for Luch to make a final.

At the Challenger event in Dallas, Mark Philippoussis quietly made a comeback, going down to 5th seed Michael Yani 6/4 6/4 in the first round. Carsten Ball, the 2nd seed, made a better impression, having gone through to the final without dropping a set. He beat Yani 6/3 7/5 in the semis this afternoon, and will play American 7th seed Ryan Sweeting in the final.

Obviously plenty of Aussies playing inBurnie, so I won't go through them all. Notably though, Bernard Tomic came through qualifying after being a late entry to the tournament, and is currently leading his semi-final against Joseph Sirianni 6/4 0/2. The winner will play 7th seed Greg Jones in the final.

Nick Lindahl was the 6th seed, but was beaten by Tomic in 3 tight sets in the second round. 3rd seed Marinko Matosevic was beaten in a 3rd set tiebreak in the first round by Sadik Kadir. Matthew Ebden, who's had a good summer, was the 8th seed but lost in the first round to Yuichi Ito of Japan. Everyone's favourite racist, 4th seed Brydan Klein, was beaten by Thai qualifier (and apologies in advance to anyone from Thailand for spelling here) Kittipong Wachiramanowong in the first round. And finally, Old Ignatian Joshua Crowe won through qualifying, but was beaten in straight sets by 5th seed Tatsuma Ito in the first round.

Good signs this week, very happy with Luczak, contiuned his good summer form, another ATP QF is a good result for him, 3 sets against Monaco is nothing to be ashamed of, I just really hope he can keep this form up, espically now of his main goal of making the main draw at Wimbledon has basically been achieved.

Same for Ball, after his LA final and winning a round at the US Open, he just collapsed in challengers at the end of the year. Has seemed to contiuned his good form from the summer into the challengers, needs to keep it up because making the top 100 for the rest of the slams is a possiblity.

Straight sets win for Tomic over Sirianni puts him into the final of Burnie. Plays Greg Jones (a junior Grand Slam finalist himself) with 80 points for the win. That + quallies would put Tomic just outside of the top 200.

Ball was beaten by Ryan Sweeting in straight sets in the final of the Dallas challenger this morning. Disappointing end to a very good week for him. He didn't have any points to defend this week, so it's all profit - he should land at about 120 in the new rankings. Tomic has also just beaten Greg Jones in the Burnie final.

It looks like the only active Aussie next week will be Peter Luczak in Costa do Sauipe, Brazil. He's got a winnable, but tough, first round match against Juan Ignacio Chela. Should he get through that he will either play 8th seed Richard Gasquet or Brazilian wildcard Ricardo Hocevar, who most will remember as Hewitt's first round whipping boy at the Aus Open.

Some Aussies finally back in action at Challenger level, and we get an all-Australian semi final between Matt Ebden and Rameez Junaid at the $35,000+H Challenger in Kyoto.

Good comeback from Ebden who would've been disappointed with his performance in Burnie, and he's beaten the likes of Stadler and Millman to get there. 80 points for the tournament win and 48 for a runner up, so if he can win his ranking will rise to somewhere in the 170s. Gonna be tough, though, because if he gets passed Junaid he'll likely face Przysiężny whose already beaten Klein and Sirianni.

Bernard Tomic gets a wildcard into Naples, and a pretty tough first round clash against Lorenzi. He's only in the top hundred because of clay results, really, and this is his level.

Does anyone know is Tomic going to be trying to qualify for any 250 or 500 events?

Will be playing a few Euro clay challengers is all I'm aware of at the moment.
