ok, you have a point about the nationality - however you are missing the main point...

when u descrimnate against someone based on their skin colour alone, when the colour of their skin makes no difference to the outcome of the event, you are being racist

Now you are starting to flounder.
Squeak said he hoped a white woman wins. If he had added...'I say that because I don't like blacks because etc etc'.... then you might have a case for calling the comment racist.
None of that was said. You, however, seem to have read it into the original statement - wrongly IMO.
I don't consider saying who you hope wins something is discrimmination - another word that usually needs an unjust element to qualify it.
Sorry, but the word 'racist' is thrown around far too much.

I too agree with this statement, but absolutely not in this case. To chose one skin colour over another with nothing else being considered is racism.

In my statement, black includes only the Williams sisters.

I have basically said I hope someone other than the Williams sisters wins. And that isn't because they are black. O just don't like them. Like a lot of people.

Chanda Rubin isn't a chance anyway so she is not included.

Completely misconstrued. Perhaps I should have worded it more obviously.

Ta.

Squeak's comment is as racist as every comment that was made about how wonderful it was that a black woman (Halle Berry) won that movie-thingy award.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm sure someone will. What I'm not sure about is how.

Ooh Fred, you are in trouble. Danni will come after you for that...or doesn't she do that when it is a mod?

FYI, I totally agree with you, but I was banned for my beliefs. Great admin

If you are who I think you are, it wasn't for your beliefs you were banned.

So it was because I called her a 'liar' because she lied?

I hope someone white wins the womens, and that's not being racist.

Without a doubt, I believe this to be the most racist statement I have ever read on BigFooty and reported my objection to it earlier. The poster clearly uses race to differentiate between whom he wishes to win or lose with no other justification other than the colour of the person's skin. The poster doesn't have to include further explanation such as " because I hate blacks or the like " to make it a racist statement in my opinion. He has clearly stated that he wishes a person or persons of a particular race not to win because of their skin colour.

However, after reading the later post by the same writer,

his explanation clarifies the fact to me that his original statement appears racist in content, though not in "spirit". It was just a poor use of language nuances in my opinion. As with many examples in our language, simple words and statements can be misinterpreted. It's quite obvious that Squeak did not mean his statement to be racist and his explanation to me is quite honorable.

Now as to Mobbenfuhrer's post,

I understand what you mean. However, the statement that one might be happy that a black woman won the award doesn't seem to connote the fact that a person of another race DIDN'T win the award in my opinion. Again, it may be the complicated nuances of our language.

And please don't accuse me of being a PC advocate. LOL I try to look at each individual case of alleged racism without throwing all under one blanket!

Oh... and a Happy Martin Luther King's Birthday to y'all!;) :D

Almost forgot... I'll be "rooting" for Serena and Andre...for "obvious" reasons. C'mon, call me a bigot!:D

Call you a bigot? No way. I'll call you a bloody racist for hoping that an aussie loses.:D

Fair enough then. The first comment looked a bit rank to me but if nothing was meant by it then no harm done.

Australians do not constitute a "race". In fact, if I remember correctly, they can't win too many against us in the pool or on the track! (Well... not including Thorpe and Freeman!):D

I'll be patriotically celebrating Australia Day on Sunday by having a Canadian manufactured can of Fosters(Fostres in Quebec) while winning a Million Dollar Jackpot in Vegas and keeping a close on on ESPN's coverage of the repeats of the tennis! Oh yeah... I think that Superbowl thingy is on this Sunday too!

Just watching the tennis now... Hewitt's down at the moment... c'mon!:D

The statement does look a bit controversial.

Let me assure you all that when I read it back I thought, 'yep, this guy doesn't like the Williams sisters'. Sorry if anyone took it the wrong way.

If I was going to make a racist comment, I would have been far more subtle about it, not that I will be making such a comment.

I'm also a little offended that some people obviously don't take enough notice of my posts to realise the context in which I express myself a lot of the time.
