Actually that's been the main criticism of his coaching on this board.

Actually the main criticism on this board, as in the media , is that he takes to long to make a change.

Since he took over Ayres has done very well to build us back up to be a contender. It was 2001 when most "experts" were tipping a very low finish for the Crows. A couple of Melbourne Newspapers even had us in the 12th-15th range.

Needless to say, the Crows exceeded expectations and gradually inproved every season until this season when we went backwards slightly. If Ayres manages to go forward again then you can't really fault his achievements. I think the doubt with Ayres is whether he can take the next step. Whether it's just a myth or not we will have to wait and see, although we may never know, there are more factors than just the coach.

Ayres does receive a lot of criticism relative to the results he has produced at the Crows.

People want a premiership but you have to look at the team lists. I know it's arguable but I would say Adelaide have not had the talent of Brisbane and Port Adelaide over the last 2 years. Collingwood are probably fairly level with us in my opinion. So, going by that we've probably finished about where we should've, so we shouldn't be too critical that he hasn't given us a premiership. Lets see how he goes in 2004.

I find it worth noting that Ayres is the only coach of Adelaide that has had them play in the finals for three years running.

It seems to me that in 2004 he is very likely to be able to break his own record.

Yeah and West Coast played in 11? 12? consecutive finals series?

Premierships = 2... same as us.

Current ladder position? 8th... lower than us.

Consecutive finals doesn't mean much in the long run under our socialist system. All it means is we got close, someone else went home with the cup we were supposedly good enough to win and we've had naff draft picks for three straight seasons.

Now if I remember what I read from your lot correctly, Williams had a different problem.

He went straight to plans B & C without even trying plan A!
Usually it's plan A and only A. When it doesn't work it's because of the players, chooks crossing the road etc.
Sometimes when finals come around, he switches to plans B or C.
But as B or C are the starting ones, they become plans A for those games. If that makes any sense.

You did well in Blighties last year. Ayres has turned the Crows into one of the toughest teams going around. I don't mind the crows but it is embarrassing the way their supporters turn on the coach when they play one bad game. Atleast everyone knows their role in the game plan. Ayres' record since he has been here is:

2000 - 8th
2001 - Not sure
2002 - 4th
2003 - 5th

What more could a fan ask!!!!!!

Some imagination, ability to beat top teams, plan B, C and possibly D if plan A fails, Ability to make moves as soon as its obvious that something is not working, having some brains when picking up match ups for opponents (Perrie Vs Lynch and Mattner on Woewodin are the 2 biggest blunders this year) etc.

As good as he has been for our club he has some major flaws in his coaching and if he doesn't improve in those areas he will never be a premiership coach.

Not sure about that. Andrew McLeod may disagree with you on that one. He looked pretty lost out there during the last half of the season.

Point taken, but who else on the crows list is strong enough to take on Lynch. Mattner on Woewodin was a blunder as Mattner is crap. For a wingman Brent Reilly is twice the player, hopefully they will play him a lot more next year.

The problem is the Mattner - Woewodin matchup blunder wasn't a once-off. My Ayres New Year's resolution is that he loses his stuborness on matchday & when it is bloody obvious a matchup isn't working, change it!!!

I watched the replay of the Pies-crows game (only time Ive seen it) the other day and Woewoden was by himself most of the game ah la Voss in the final.

Obviously Woewoden was not hurting the Crows either.
