With the latest number 1 picks having some rough times over the last 5 years, the best number 1 pick over the last 10 years could be a backman in Weitering.

It seems as though Goddard, Whitfield and Hodge would be quite high up on the ratings as well, players who played in the backline majority of their careers.

Every year the highest you are seeing a backman rated leading up to the draft is around 10. As a Geelong fan I am very happy with our pick of O'Sullivan and would struggle to swap him for anyone taken before as well.

Do you think we will ever see players taken at 1 again who are specialist backmen?
And would you be happy if your club used a pick on such a player?

Yes because Key Defenders are Hard to Find and don't grow on Trees. Looking at my own Club and we've Struggled for Years when it comes to developing Them hence having to Trade in Ready Made KPDs such as Ratugolea and Zerk-Thatcher.

Counterpoint: would you rather have McGrath or McCluggage?

Also, if they were any good, they'd be key forwards.

Channeling Jason Dunstall there !

Funnily enough, I saw Darren Gaspar recently.

He had a very interesting start to his career considering the current discussion around Harley Reid:

“Gaspar was drafted with the first pick in the 1993 National Draft by the Sydney Swans.

After only two seasons with the Swans, he turned down a one-year deal and moved to the Richmond Football Club via the 1996 Pre-season Draft.”
