Yes we won by heaps but **** me I'm sick of our natural reaction particularly down hbf to handball ****ing backwards. Cost us a 100 point win tonight and it is so bloody telegraphed it isn't funny. Attacking handballs! Please!

Agree a point.

The backwards handball can be really effective, but we do it a lot. Godden mentioned it's actually something they are trying to limit.

Don't mind the backwards handball when the player with the ball can clearly see their opponent is clear, or in a better position than them.

If it's a reflex "I'm screwed if I don't get rid of this NOW" then I'd really rather we just kick it forward. If we're getting caught out by the opponent setting up a zone then scrub it along the ground.

Short handballs to a player under pressure pisses me off more, Matt is a shocker for doing it

There is very obviously a strategy to handball to a player under pressure, with the express understanding that the player will handball immediately back. The old one-two player, trying to help the first guy get a split second of extra space. Matt in particular loves doing it and whenever he doesn't get it straight back he gives his teammates a serve.

The problem is when the first handball requires something high and loopy. Just allows the second player to get shut down, and then the only option is to go back to the first player who has not actually gained any kind of advantage.

I also have to wonder how long Matt can continue yelling at his teammates all match long before one of them tells him to shut it.

Next week vs Essendon we need to push it harder. They are a very different team to Gold Coast.

Point two is the issue it's our natural reflex action

We do it way too much

Don't mind a backwards handball if you're facing backwards when you win the ball

But otherwise...? It's the careful, safe, panicky Michael Doughty option that has crippled us in big games for so long.

The opposition close in with the pressure, eventually cause an up and under kick, they rebound...

It was happening in front of goal at times too. I’d rather have someone have a quick ping at the sticks then no shot offered at all.

Honestly it's much better than most other options in most cases, finding a relieving team mate in space. The big **** up by Seed was diabolical, however.

To be honest Seed was extremely unimpressive. Would consider McPherson if his body holds up into next year and Seed doesn't improve dramatically

Agreed, in tight contested situations where a split second decision is required it's often the only option, the other option is hang on to it and get nailed HTB.

And I might add a lot of the longer backwards handballs are to a player in a better position to switch the play across the defensive zone to get the ball moving along the other side wing.

I agree, it's a good system most of the time, they know the area in which a teammate is likely to be in space and he often gives a releasing kick out to either side of the ground. Our defensive 6 seem to have this system down pat, it is just the missed mark by Kelly and shocking handball attempt by Seedsman which sticks out as a red flag to some.

You are so right Punchy.
It's almost ingrained into their DNA and so frustrating to watch.
I'm not a fan of kicking backwards either; so as much as Im against rule changes, I'll throw a party if a rule prevents kicking backwards.
It's become a cancer.

Last night we had atkins sitting unopposed 5-10m off the back of just about every stoppage. I have no idea why GC let that happen, (seemed to be trying to have an extra mid closer to the rucks) but very happy with the backwards handball to him if they're going to allow that. 35 possies as a result. I don't think too many teams will let him stand around on his own like that.

The worst part of us doing this, is when one opposition player provides the pressures and just keeps running backwards, because they don’t have to break stride to chase the ball

Absolutely infuriating

I was at the game. Mostly this happened when they looked up the line and there was only GCS players.

That being said, the handballs to stationery players can go and get stuffed.

This. And handballs at our feet. Seriously, by the time a player bends down to pick it up and then straighten up again, they are being tackled
