It's 6-and-out and the batter has to go fetch it. However, because I'm 22 and my brother is 11, I can usually convince him to go get it. ;)

Right,

Now I know this might end up on the "Cricket board" however I find that the best answers come from "General Talk." Anyhoo...

My question is, "Should the person who hit the ball over the fence, on the full, go and get the ball from the next door neighbours backyard, dog or no dog or should it be the person who bowled the bouncer knowing full well the batsman couldn't help himself?"

My opinion (the bowler) is that the batsman should get it. Simple. He hit it, he should get it.

My brother (the Batsman) disagrees.

Nah the batsman has to go get it, they hit it over the fence, thats always been a rule in our backyard cricket games ;)

Aiming a bouncer at your brothers head not in the spirit of backyard cricket?

Aiming a bouncer at your brothers head is exactly in the spirit of back yard cricket.

If the bowler wants to keep playing, he gets the ball or supplies another one.

Why should the batsman want to go get the ball and keep playing anyway? He's out for god's sake, and should at the very most have to get the drinks from the esky.

ps - one hand / one bounce - MANDATORY.

And may I add to that -
6 and OUT and get your own faarking ball
>4 People playing, Tippity
>6 people playing, auto Keeper
>8 people playing, one hand, one bounce, no hands, 2 bounces (no hats/shirts allowed in this one)

In backyard cricket, hitting the batsman is easily as good as a wicket, particularly when you get them on that fleshy part of the thigh that bruises real easy.
Nah, the worst part of the body to get hit is just above the hip. Hurts like hell.

And I would know because I got hit there today (with the ball travelling at 130 km/h, my mate was using a tennis racquet). :(

Exactly - but may I add also - a small conundrum in the whole 6 and out thing, which has always bugged me:

Nobody ever actually keeps score in BY cricket. I know you get your 6 runs, but it's really just a feel good thing for slogging the faarker over the fence. Having him go get it while you relax and enjoy a beer for your efforts is worth far more than the 6 runs IMO.

ps - How's China going? I have the crappiest contractor in the world from Beijing working for us here - you can have the buggers. one year in and they're 10 months behind program.

Believe me, for China, that's bloody fast! The way to make them do it in a year is to feed them plenty, keep the ciggarettes away and tell them that they have two weeks to do it!

Thanks mate I feel much better now.

Their boss was putting our secretary away but she's left now to the US. So maybe their performance will pick up if he concentrates on his job (like me right now!!). Our new secretary is nicer though IMO.

After having several heated 'Discusions' about who should go get the ball me and my mates developed a new rule where its 6 an out if the batter does not retrieve the ball BUT if he does retrieve the ball within a given time frame, 5-10 mins depending on obstacles, dogs etc. then he stays in.

It is quite funny watching someone play a cracking cover drive over the side fence then drop the bat and sprint after it. :D

No matter the "sport", you "hoik" it, you "fetch" it.

Penalties for non-complinace are severe!
