Played my first game of APL in 10 years this evening and placed 3/24. Forgot it attracts a pretty uncouth crowd, plenty of racism and generally unattractive behaviour on display.

Do the points earned from your place in the tournament amount to anything at the end of the season, or are they strictly decorative?

I remember playing apl about 10 years ago & sat night free rolls would have upto 20 tables then a few years later it went down to like 6-7 tables...

run good mate!

This was a bad one a few weeks ago.

I’d been in really good tournament form online, so entered a satellite, which I never do.

Qualified (I didn’t realise the satellite tournament didn’t have a winner, that it ends when the 3 seats or whatever are all that’s left), and after about a total of 11 hours in front of the laptop I was down to final 2. It was already easily my best result playing poker.

It was only the 3rd hand of heads up, we were really even - after this 6 hour tournament and 100+ entrants, we came to heads up with the other guy in front by less than a BB.

I had KK, raised from the SB, he re-raised, and I shoved. He called and turns over 99.

We both flopped trips, turn was a brick… and he rivers quads.

As I was screaming/swearing, I accidentally knocked my laptop on the floor… and it had taken one too many bumps, the screen was deceased.

After buying a new MacBook and a good bottle of whiskey the 2nd place prize was gone.

Mate, where are you playing online and what's the setup?

I'm playing on Ignition, it's a legal one in Australia. The only downside is that it's not a massive one, so sometimes you might have to wait a while for the tournament you want.

Thanks. Yeah, I play there too.

Another APL question someone may know, as the website isn't overly clear.

The Season 4 2023 state champs are being held in Feb 2023. The qualification period is listed as 01 October-31 October on the APL website for this event.

Surely the qualification period is for 3 months (01-Oct until 31-Dec) rather than just one month? Otherwise what's the point of having 4 months of qualifying games a year and 8 months of no qualifying games?

I would expect it's a typo. State Champs qualification has always been quarterly periods with the champs about a month or two after end of the quarter.

Spot on, received a response from APL, it was a typo on their website and it runs 01-Oct to 31-Dec.

Blinds 1/2k

BB with J6o and 43k

Utg1 raises to 7k - call button call and I think nah get out of this and SB calls - grr I throw in the 5k and there is 35k in the pot.

Flop is j64 - interesting.

SB checks I decide to check shove. Utg1 shoves 48k fold fold fold I call and see QQ

Turn is a 7

River , of course,is the Q

Can't fault it except it was Kiwi MrKK

Fold pre ;)

(Actually, not joking. You're not deep enough to put in 5k and only continue on two pair or better flops, and if you're going to continue on Jxx flops then you'll be in some ugly spots.)

You are correct and I flagged my intention to fold.

It was only the 7/1 I could get if the miracle happens. (Already had dead 2k)

I figured he had pockets. It was only until the shove on the flop that informed me he wanted to represent the over pair or had the QQ, KK, AA

Given I had hit the 2 pair I wasn't going anywhere.

I was happy to fold post flop if I didn't hit big. I could have managed the smaller stack.

I gambled and I lost. I reckon 8/10 the queen,4or 7 doesn't turn up.

Probably still doesn't make it right 😛

It's probably right if you have the discipline to fold with top pair on the flop. That extra 5k is more than 10% of your stack so you're playing with fire.

Got my AA cracked the other day. Sure, we've all had it but perhaps not like this.

2/5 (£).

I'm UTG and raise it to 12. Folds around to BB, who is on the other side of the dealer to me. I'm listening to a nice podcast about a pedo hoax (totally gripping). I mistakenly think the BB folds. I turn over the rockets. Oh, no. The BB had called the 12. Alerted to this, I ship him him the money while the dealer and other players say I can play open hand. No. I screwed up. Take the money. I say "I cracked my own aces," which elicits many laughs.

Not related at all, this is the most active thread here so I thought I'd post here.

At crown Melbourne, can you up and cash out your chips at any time?

Example, I start with a $100 stack, win $50, I'm up $50, can I simply stand up, walk to the cashier and cash out? Or is it tournament rules?

Does anyone have any web sites or youtube channels that they really like for getting better?

I find myself not having topped up my account for months - but not having withdrawn anything either. I'm really good at getting to the money, and if they goal is to "just" make final table rather than win it, I'm ok at that. So I can break even without making profit.

What I'd really like is some instructionals on how to improve my play getting from the money positions to the winning position, I seem to fail when I get to the pointy end.

(I say that having just finished 2nd in an online tournament for a few hunjy, which is nice... but it comes after missing a potential 1000+ the other day cos I'm just not good at playing range and managing risk coming to the money positions/the final 2 tables/the final table/the top couple.)

Sounds like you played at an average venue

Some venues are fun with plenty of banter, others are far too serious or don't handle themselves with class.

Also yes your points count, you will have to play quite a few games to qualify for anything better, easiest way to qualify for something I've found is winning a night somewhere, get PTCs and you'll be able to use those PTCs to buy in to a APLPT Main Event or something.

Some absolute gamblers out there that play 5-7 times a week going for venue/regional gongs, no point chasing in that regard, I've been trying to work out a way on qualifying for states or something, but the $30-40 games I've been playing in my region are far too big with 50-90 players every night, much easier when I was playing $25 games that averaged 25-35 players but the downside to those games is they only ever paid top 3-4 and most you'd ever get would be $300 if you were lucky (normally around $200). So yeah, I just play the venues I enjoy playing at nowadays having travelled around this year to a few, I'm also playing larger fields far better now too consistently finding ways to get to the final table or the last 2 tables, I find playing disciplined poker grinding it out on a middling stack works more often than not waiting for the dominos to fall around me as far too often your regular APL player doesn't have the patience to play the ICM game and will want to play any 2 cards, I just wait to pick up a big hand and go to war with it, if I get taken down, all well, onto the next one.

Gotta say, it's absolutely magnificent when you're chip leader final 4 players in a 70 player field, sitting on the button and the 2nd largest stack sitting next to me in the cutoff has already jammed into me and I look down at my cards and see I have the king of clubs and while I can't quite tell what the other card is, I 100% know it's another black face card though as I could just see the outline of it

So I slowly squeeze the second face card down, hoping my 1 in 5 chance of it being the king of spades comes true and boy it sure does

Right then and there I know I've got one hand on the victory for the night even before I see showdown/a full 5 cards, so how do I get these short stacks in the blinds to commit and go for it, so I tank for like over a minute, look at my cards again, before announcing a call. Didn't quite work there, but the big blind thought of it. Ended up being up against a suited weak ace, my kings held and the guy in the big blind ended up eliminating the small blind a few hands later then we made a deal as it was late with me having a 2 to 1 chip lead, so I got like $30 more and the PTCs/victory, perhaps if I had a larger chip lead I'd offer slightly less, but yeah, good to book a win for the first time in over 18 months after a few 3rds, 4ths and 6th place finishes this year where I cashed (I only played once between June 2021-May 2022)
