Bad luck to the saints after they lost to the kangaroos.

Here are the results of the match.

Laidley's perfect start

The Kangaroos have notched their first win of the 2003 season, running over an improved St Kilda by 26 points in a tight match at the MCG.

The Saints had a one-point lead at the final change, but did not manage a goal in the final term as the Roos added four majors to their score, marking Dean Laidley’s first victory as a senior coach.

The Roos sealed the result in style when Brent Harvey took five bounces on the wing before finding the influential Drew Petrie who goaled to give his side a 15-point advantage 16 minutes in.

The Saints were highly competitive for three quarters, but then disappointing as they were overrun and out-pressured in the final quarter. They worked to a three-goal lead in the opening term, but their over-use of the ball allowed the Roos to capitalise when it mattered.

The Kangas went into the half-time break with a one-point lead after kicking three straight goals in the second term.

But just as Stephen Milne kicked the first, and the Saints’ only, goal of that quarter, acting St Kilda captain Lenny Hayes snagged one within thirty seconds of the third to give his side an early five-point advantage.

A highlight of the even contest was the much-anticipated débuts of draft picks Luke Ball, who was sidelined with osteitis pubis last year after being drafted in 2001, and Daniel Wells recruited by the Roos in last national draft.

Both youngsters were prominent, demonstrated their superb skills and appeared exceptionally poised, even when under pressure.

Wells played on and off the bench, but spent time in the middle and on the Roos’ forward line. The highlight came in the second quarter when the West Australian teenager worked hard to set up a goal that David King kicked from 50 metres out.

Ball kicked an important goal 15 minutes into the third term to get his team to within a point after the Roos kicked two successive majors.

Milne was the star of the first half, the exciting goalsneak nailed three goals in opening term and pounced on his first opportunity in the second quarter when he again snapped truly to take his tally to four. Significantly, Milne did not add to his match statistics in the second half.

Former Bulldog Luke Penny and 2002 Rising Star Nick Riewoldt lined up as the Saints key forwards, but were mostly ineffective.

After a brilliant 2002, Riewoldt was well-held by young John Baird, and looked particularly out of sorts in the first round of the new season. He took a heavy knock early in first term, and after a long chat with the coach from the bench early in the third term, was moved to half-back.

Seasoned defender Fraser Gehrig struggled against powerful forward Digby Morrell, who kicked two majors in the opening term. Gehrig was moved to the Saints’ attack and with his side just a point in front, kicked an important goal at the 22-minute-mark of the third quarter.

Penny was moved to centre half-back on Morrell, who added just a point to his tally.

Xavier Clarke was excellent for the Saints, playing off half-back on Leigh Harding who began promisingly after kicking the opening goal of the match. Harding didn’t manage another major and was taken from the ground in the fourth quarter.

But luck today guys.

Was a competitive performance and i think the signs are there that it might not be too far away before those little things that keep letting you down start to get ironed out.

You were bloody hard at it at the fall of the ball through the midfield and really matched us, which is something we pride ourselve's on, Pagan or no Pagan.

Just need to sharpen up some of those kicks (as do we) and decision making and some good results wont be too far around the corner.

Good luck for the rest of the year guys!!

Bad luck Sainters.

I thought your guys were good value in the first half, but you lost in in the 3rd quarter- a 1 point lead was never going to be enough with the Roos kicking to the "non-gaping hole" end.

I still have doubts over your coach, but sheesh - you have so much talent in that side that I reckon you'll win more games than you'll lose. I made a comment to one of the other Roos fans that both our clubs seem to be starting off our "rebuilding" from a similar stage, and that with today, we might be seeing a preview of the 2006 Grand Final (just as long as you get a decent coach ;) ).

Yeah- Bad Luck to the Saints

You played well.. just over run in the last qtr- when your young blokes get more experience those kind of bumps will be wiped out.

Go Roos

Well done to the roo's. You's deserved to win that match. And that Baird looks a sort. And to think to think I actually predicted St Nick to kick a bag on him. Oh well, he'll do it next time. :p

Take Heart !

Take Heart Sainters,

Remember you guys had more players going in underdone....the improvement will definately arrive this season. Hudgeton, Ball, Clarke were fantastic and with some accurate kicking you just never know what couldv'e happened.

Tough conditions first up and I'll be looking to tip the Sainters more often than I think I would of initially.

Penny & Powell are handy pick ups !

Good Luck for the 2003 campaign

bad luck sainters

This was an arm wrestle for three quarters
the only difference was abit of experience
in finishing when it mattered in the last quarter!

Some positives were Z.CLARKE-HE WAS SENSATIONAL.

Baker-looks a find!Also liked the look of L.BALL!

BE PATIENT!IT WILL HAPPEN

I have my doubts on your coach
6-30 the doubting Thomas brigade are circling

OVER + OUT
DIGBY

Thanks for all your comments on the match. I don't think many of us will be so complimentary when analysing our teams performance.

Anyway, congratulations on the win. The better team and the side that wanted to win more deservedly got the four points.

With the exception of Xavier Clarke and Robert Harvey, no Saints player put in four quarters. It does leave you feeling pretty good to see someone like X come of age like that. Guys like Hayes, Thompson, Milne and Powell had great halves but faded out of the game badly. Whether our guys were underdone or not, I think it's a sign of them still being mentally weak. We had a real chance and we blew it.

We did miss Hamill and Lawrence. They are arguably our toughest two players at the club and this is an area that I think we are most at our weakest. Hopefully Kosi will be back next week because he would have been a very handy player to play on a Morrell or a Petrie. His height just adds a lot of versatility to the line-up. I'd think Dal Santo and Montagna should be next in line to be included. They are two young kids who could most make an impact in giving us a more skillful and faster line up.

Contrary to a lot of the reports I was very happy with Penny's performance. He gave us a real contest when he was up forward and will be much better for the run. John Baird was fantastic. I don't expect Nick to be beaten that emphatically too often and that alone gives us huge scope for improvement. I also enjoyed watching Ball and Wells play. You don't often see kids in their first game make an impact like that.

At this stage we don't know where our respective teams are at. A few of us were pretty excited when we beat Carlton in round one last year. Who would have thought how their season will turn out. Let's hope yesterdays game may turn out to be a clash between two sides pushing for a top eight berth. On yesterday's performance, the Roos look like they have been underestimated..........again.
