The Kangaroos have notched their first win of the 2003 season, running over an improved St Kilda by 26 points in a tight match at the MCG.
The Saints had a one-point lead at the final change, but did not manage a goal in the final term as the Roos added four majors to their score, marking Dean Laidley’s first victory as a senior coach.
The Roos sealed the result in style when Brent Harvey took five bounces on the wing before finding the influential Drew Petrie who goaled to give his side a 15-point advantage 16 minutes in.
The Saints were highly competitive for three quarters, but then disappointing as they were overrun and out-pressured in the final quarter. They worked to a three-goal lead in the opening term, but their over-use of the ball allowed the Roos to capitalise when it mattered.
The Kangas went into the half-time break with a one-point lead after kicking three straight goals in the second term.
But just as Stephen Milne kicked the first, and the Saints’ only, goal of that quarter, acting St Kilda captain Lenny Hayes snagged one within thirty seconds of the third to give his side an early five-point advantage.
A highlight of the even contest was the much-anticipated débuts of draft picks Luke Ball, who was sidelined with osteitis pubis last year after being drafted in 2001, and Daniel Wells recruited by the Roos in last national draft.
Both youngsters were prominent, demonstrated their superb skills and appeared exceptionally poised, even when under pressure.
Wells played on and off the bench, but spent time in the middle and on the Roos’ forward line. The highlight came in the second quarter when the West Australian teenager worked hard to set up a goal that David King kicked from 50 metres out.
Ball kicked an important goal 15 minutes into the third term to get his team to within a point after the Roos kicked two successive majors.
Milne was the star of the first half, the exciting goalsneak nailed three goals in opening term and pounced on his first opportunity in the second quarter when he again snapped truly to take his tally to four. Significantly, Milne did not add to his match statistics in the second half.
Former Bulldog Luke Penny and 2002 Rising Star Nick Riewoldt lined up as the Saints key forwards, but were mostly ineffective.
After a brilliant 2002, Riewoldt was well-held by young John Baird, and looked particularly out of sorts in the first round of the new season. He took a heavy knock early in first term, and after a long chat with the coach from the bench early in the third term, was moved to half-back.
Seasoned defender Fraser Gehrig struggled against powerful forward Digby Morrell, who kicked two majors in the opening term. Gehrig was moved to the Saints’ attack and with his side just a point in front, kicked an important goal at the 22-minute-mark of the third quarter.
Penny was moved to centre half-back on Morrell, who added just a point to his tally.
Xavier Clarke was excellent for the Saints, playing off half-back on Leigh Harding who began promisingly after kicking the opening goal of the match. Harding didn’t manage another major and was taken from the ground in the fourth quarter.
