I was just wondering if, out of all you Swans supporters, anyone is like myself. I actually cant watch a game. I will sit on the computer get a score then put it off for 15 minutes or so then get another score etc. I actually find things to do so I dont even have to listen to it on the tv. ( My wife watches) She thinks I'm mad, and I tend to agree. The first full game I watched "live" in years was the Carlton NAB game and thats only because I wanted to see how the new players went. But that was an effort for me.
Dont think that I'm not a die hard fan. I grew up in South Melbourne and have a lot of old and new memorabilia and am a "Supporters Club" member because naturally I cant go and watch a game.
Anyway it would be good to know if there are any more out there like me or am I on my own.

Cheers

Go Swannies

I too suffer from this strange malaise. I will anticipate the game all week, check the teams, the weather, the stars, make sure that everybody knows the Swans are on and I am not to be disturbed for any reason, not for births, deaths or the outbreak of WWIII. The game starts, the ball is bounced and I leave the room....... weird. I immediately come back of course but I will continue to change the channel, wander into the garden, sit up, sit down, yell at people that aren't there.......nuts.

Not so much with the Swans, but I'm a Dragons fan in the NRL and I'm actually cursed, I have NEVER been to a game we have won. I even flew to Melbourne a few years ago to watch us play the Storm and we lost, went to the charity shield when South Sydney came back into the competition and we drew, which is my personal best so far. Went to the Anzac day game, we lost, etc. STILL have never seen them win so I am never watching another game live again. Its for the good of the club.

Don't worry, that effect only seems to work on the Dragons so I'll still go to a few Swannies games when I get time

Yep, I have done this.

Or I sit down then decide to pause it on the IQ and go and do something else for a while, then fast forward through the boring bits like shots on goal. It's a bad habit.

I am fine going to the games, I just seem to get uptight watching them on the telly. I guess at the games I can yell and scream and act like an idiot and not be out of place.

My ex used to say my tension watching games on telly put my sons off watching. That's why she's my ex (nah, kidding ...)

I was worse during 2005-06, and I think it had to do with expectation, but I'm much better now, much calmer.

We've got new faces and a changing style that seems more attractive. The style that won us a flag and infuriated opposition supporters and AFL chief executives also became a bit frustrating for me (and other Swans fans, I suspect).

Mainly, I think, it's the fact I'm now a lot more realistic about expectations for the season, and I'm trying to be more mature and enjoy the games just for the football and seeing the new players.

But I can relate to the comments about being excited about games, full of anticipation, then finding other thigns to do when the game is on (particularly when we're playing badly). In recent years I have not been able to sit through all of our games against Collingwood or Adelaide ... that changed yesterday.

Generally the only time I will ever miss any part of a swans game is in a tight game when we go 2-3 goals down in the final quarter with maybe 10-15 minutes remaining. I'm in the frame of mind where I'm pissed because things aren't going our way yet I still can't concede defeat. So instead of watching on in a state of frustration and hopelessness, I switch channel or go outside for a cigarette (when I smoked) in the hope that when I came back we'd be making a comeback or at the very least we'd be so far gone that I could accept defeat and watch the rest of the game.

i reckon i have missed on average 2 home games live per season since 1998, and maybe 3 away games on tv.

I'd love to be able to watch games live on tv or even get up the courage to go to a game, but every year as soon as the footy starts I just cant bring myself to do it. I do my sums so I know what time 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 times are so I can check on the scores but thats it. I give myself the shits.( Not literally:D)
Im sure 1000s of people can reply here and say the opposite because I'm in the minority but I just wanted to know how similar people coped

I hate missing a few minutes or a game because of work. To then be free to watch a game, only to walk away because ' I can't bear to watch' wouldn't make sense.

What's the worse thing that could happen?

Yep..................we lose!

Then there's always the following week.

There are worse things in life!!

I don't think you're alone. People bleed red and white in many different ways.

My dad can't handle the stress of watching a game. As soon as things get too exciting he has to leave the room to play sudoku upstairs. But everytime there's a loud crowd noise he comes hovering back at the top of the stairs keen to know what happenned.

He loves his Swans. But as an oddball supporter that way too.

The most romantic thing I ever did was have my wedding the same night as a West Coast Eagles game. But barring that I'd have to be under an avalanche in the Himilayas to miss a game. And even then I'd prob be texting for the result before I got onto the emergency services for help :D

My husband can be like that as well. Not a swans supporter, he's geelong, but same kind of thing. He can sometimes watch the first half of the game, but if the scores get tight he will only watch the live scoreboard. He couldn't even bring himself to begin to watch the hawks/cats game last week.
He'll go to games though when geelong is playing, but if its close he'll just watch the ground, not the actual game.
I totally don't get it. Sure, it's not nice to lose, especially a final. But there's 2 teams on the ground all the time, and only 1 winner. Not looking isn't going to change the result...

I find this very strange. I do get excited when thee Swans are playing, and whether i'm at the ground or on the sofa, I tend to take every mark, dodge every opposition player and kick every goal, yes, even from the sofa. My friends, and ex wives have found it funny to watch (but not funny enough for the wives to stay around, lol, thats why they are ex) but I am apparently very active during the games.

I get disappointed if I miss the coin toss at the beginning of the game, yet alone missing any other part of the game.

I hate losing, especially the close games. However, as I have been a Swans supporter (Sydney and South Melbourne) all my life, and that is a long time, I am never comfortable we have won until the final siren. I dont care how far in front we are, but over the years I have seen us lose some shockers even after having a supposedly unbeatable score. I have learnt to remind my self that it is only a game.

On saying that, I still love to watch the games, even replays, even if we have lost. I get something out of every game, as I know that every game there are still some Swans winners on the ground. If every Swans player has been beaten by his opponent, there will still be some good passages of play, a good mark, a clever hand ball, etc., and they are what I hold on to in my hope for the following week.

Thankfully we have a far different team today than what we have had in past years and we have excellent depth, so hopefully one day I will learn to be confident in our ability to win, even if we are only up by a couple of goals.

Love watching the swans play - go crazy during tight games - but nearly fall asleep when its a thrashing.

I am a league convert switching to AFL, I am a Swannies fan by default seeing as though they are the only team within Kooee of me, I am generally a big sports fan and AFL is one sport i haven't really gotten into so here is my attempt to learn the game and it's players.

I know Goodes, O'Loughlin, O'Keefe, Bolton..but that's about it, I knew Kennelly before he left and Hall before he left.

What positions and positioning is there in the game?, I wouldn't know much except i know what a Goal and a Behind is.

Cheers.

I agree with Stat_Machine, watch the Swans games :thumbsu:. But for a general idea of the positioning have a look here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_rules_football_positions
