They are percussion instruments. But there are some cool avant garde works for “prepared piano” where the instructions are to lift the lid of the instrument and clip pegs in selected spaces on the strings and foil and bits of gravel etc. interesting results though I don’t think those experiments stood the test of time in the same way as, say, Sir Paul McCartney. If you did that and called it the Jazz Michaels it would have gone very big though
Prepared piano is what I was thinking of and would work well for our future bigfooty band, the jazz michaels

Album names (to hijack a thread):
  • maths my bitch up
  • trombones in hell
  • dig a nice a hole and play some tunes in it
I like this one best.

I struggled to come up with a genre to fit it. Obviously wouldn't be jazz.
Hey Cruise - I think I’m onto something now for the jazz michaels. A ska-punk sound with trombones and hammered dulcimer. No michaels need apply, but men with names like Duke Ellington to be given preference

It's not my scene, but there's a few decent examples of folks turning pianos into percussion instruments I remember an old music teacher was into.
I saw the late, great Chick Corea open up a grand piano and play the strings directly at the Melbourne Jazz Festival a few years ago in an improv session with Herbie Hancock. Was so good.

I just can't think of any band names sorry! I'm not clever enough. I really like the name: "Glen Waverly and the Mentones" but that's not me.

Genre is the tricky part but I think it should probably not include a bouzouki but have at least three jazz specialists called Michael
Two violins, a cello and one of those metal drums that get all melodic for people who can't play music.

What are your thoughts on steel drums? Trinidadian or whatever.

I have a strange love of them. I would really like to see a world music type thing featuring steel drums. Maybe called the jazz michaels
It's fun party music, but I'd struggle to listen to it outside of said party. Same goes for the timbale.

Street drumming is fun though. Could imagine a street drummer band as the Jazz Michaels. Or someone who plays normal songs on a heap of metal trash cans etc like old mate from Skeleton Key with a dude on sax.

I got partner PG to read some of this thread because I thought he would be into it and hell in general.

He didn’t quite get it. He was like “I could propose any name for a band like The Bumper Bars or the Half-Back Flankers…”

An unrealised talent! I love The Half-Back Flankers!

Would be even better as Michael and the Half-Back Flankers. I like those 50s/60s names with (person) and the (something)

Was in a band called KIF(1970s) . Unfortunately the Richmond cops got too interested in us and that was all she wrote .
