The Barassi Line promotes interesting discussion and we all want it to move closer to the capital cities of Sydney and Brisbane.

The success of GWS has brought a stronger football mentality to western suburbs of Sydney, but if you find yourself in the hardcore NRL areas you can really be a target of abuse.

I would not recommend wearing AFL garments down the main street of Bankstown or Church Street in Parramatta. Some of it gets quite hurtful.

I purchased some footy gear from the huge sports shop in Parramatta one day and put the clothes on straight away and was chastised by this gang.

They promote this sports shop as rugby league but there is an impressive amount of AFL gear so I recommend this store for people stranded in Sydney looking for football clothing.

A relative of the late great Mick Nolan directed me towards this store called Peter Winns.

I always have my cap on. Even at work running the trains through Western Sydney. Never an issue.

More and more "go the Giants" but never had abuse.

It depends where you go. I would not recommend running around the streets of Penrith or Bankstown in football clothing. The closer you get to the main city drag the more it becomes friendlier to footy. Further out is more hostile that is just from my experience but I am only in Sydney a few weeks a year, mostly Parramatta.

Must be one hell of a different crowd when you are there.

When im there (lived in Penrith till 12 months ago) never had an issue.

What about yourself Ichabod Noodle?

Thats the big difference between Sydney and Melbourne I doubt if any Storm supporters would have been abused by AFL fans in Melbourne for just wearing their clubs jumpers
The RL types seem to be scared of and aboslutely hate Australian Football with a passion and thats why I like to point out things like last nights pathetic crowd of 8100 at ANZ and remind them which is the biggest national game of all in Aussie and it aint RL.

I walked around parra, mt druitt, and seven hills in my tigs gear multiple times and noone blinked or cared

I think people have been watching Housos too much

The ACT whilst being quite cosmopolitan in its sporting tastes leans far more towards the rugby codes then AFL.

Read on Canberra Times, tell me what you see.

This is despite the fact that:-
AFL / GWS is on FTA tv - RU not on FTA / raiders not on FTA
AFL spend on DOs and junior programs in the ACT would dwarf all other sports put together.

Scared of / hate?

Lol.

I pity the melbourne storm fan that gets stuck in a conversation with you.

The typical Rugby League "type" enjoys a heavy contact, sometimes violent sport, where you have to smash your way through the other sides defensive line with either power , guile or speed more then the other team does to you, to win.

If you are the typical AFL fan, then the typical AFL fan enjoys paying out another games perceived short comings (whether it be crowds / or non KKK ethnicity) more then they appear to enjoy supporting the game they claim to support so much.

No worries dude.

Compare the League Unlimited AFL forum to the big footy's league one

http://forums.leagueunlimited.com/forums/afl.89/

https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/forums/rugby-league-nrl-super-league.63/

The vast majority of footy fans I know like the games of soccer and union and a minority like league as well. I'm sure it s similar story among league fans as well

While the rest of the post is just deluded-sulty-league-guy stuff the "non KKK ethnicity" stuff really should test your welcome here among the moderators

You've been pretty reasonable to date, but this post is a shocker

My comment was in respect of ourgame, it was not meant to be general in nature, I thought that was obvious.

How a an AFL leaning neutral to other sports fan enjoys watching a professional union game over a professional league game is beyond me. But each to their own.

I am pretty confident a general league fan (whom has no affiliation with union or AFL) would more likely enjoy watching a game of professional AFL over professional union.

Basically because in Union there is a contest for the ball - scrums, lineouts and particularly rucks. I've spoken to a lot of league supporters who can't stomach australian football for the opposite reasons (ie seagulls fighting over a chip / fumble ball)

As someone who has played and follows all 4 codes (and follows gridiron too) I can get it.

League fans I know, especially younger ones who never knew RL when there was a contest for the ball - as there was back when I played - like the structured nature of the game.

To them Union is too technical and messy, and AFL is way too unstructured. But, they will lean towards union if they have to (actually my die-hard RL mates prefer NFL or college football over both of them - again gridiron has structure).

What an AFL fan feels when he sees two RL guys just smash into each and fall over is what a RL fan feels when he sees AFL players tapping and fumbling the ball around on the ground.

Union and AFL at least has the contest and kicking in common.

Interestingly when I have got leaguies to actually come to an AFL game they get into it a bit more - because so much is happening off the ball that they have never seen on TV. For example, what looks like a soft mark by a guy standing on his own on TV - ho hum - is seen to be the result of that player running 50 metres off the ball to get there when you are at the game.

Was this a "one-off" incident? If not, how many times has it happened to you?
Was it just some banter? Or was it derogatory/abusive -examples?

Eh, professional union does have more of a contest for the ball.

But a contest for the ball isnt the be all and end all in sports, see NFL. Or on the other side soccer, which less face it, if a neutral to all sports was watching it is probably the most boring of the lot.

Professional union to me, has so much time wasted on stoppages and so little time in actual competition, ie trying to beat a defender or tackle an attacker, or move the ball into space, because they spend so much time "competing for the ball" or resetting scrums, kicking penalty goals, imo if you enjoy that more then professional league, then that to me suggests that you probably have a bit of anti league in you.

Hence why my posts might feel offensive.

Australian Football again compared to pro union, at least in AFL everyone is trying to do something for most of the entirety of the match and there isnt much time flipping around.

amatuer union is obviously a different kettle of fish.

To be honest I agree with most of your thread except the bolded. Also AFL fans get into Grid Iron too, look at the grid iron thread on this board, it is an excellent game. IMO if RL wasnt big in Australia, AFL fans would probably enjoy it more, same as RL with AFL.

obviously there is a lot of things both games could do better, however, a RL player generally speaking would rather not get smashed and fall over, however, the opposition team did that to him, when he was trying to run past or through ppl. Same as if an AFL player got smashed or run over.

When a player is taping the ball on the ground playing for a free or to get the ball into a better position is not exactly a brave / noble play as getting in their with your body on the line and running / hand passing / kicking it out for a goal or to a better position. Not that RL doesnt have the occasional shit play as well.

I wouldn't say it is always rugby league types. The most vile abuse thrown in my direction came from a couple dressed in West Sydney Wanderers clothes. I like to wear GWS clothes when I'm in Sydney to get the message out there and while most people say nothing, some can be horrible. There are some people out there who hate Australian Football but it will not stop me from promoting it wherever I am.

The problem with league - and why I prefer to watch union over league - is that there just isn't enough risk taking. It's very much a sport where playing the safe option will generally mean you're better off, because taking risks mean a greater chance of mistakes, and mistakes are heavily punished. You're probably better off taking the tackle and getting another go rather than doing something exciting, as opposed to union where you aren't necessarily going to get that next tackle, so the incentive is there to throw it around a bit.
I get your point about union in that there's a lot of standing around waiting for scrums, penalty kicks on goal, lineouts etc. But I think overall it beats the predictable nature of league - tackle tackle tackle tackle tackle kick repeat. That's not to say league doesn't have it's good points (usually on the last tackle close to the line), but IMO the game doesn't encourage it enough.

Yep dont be cowered by by the numbskulls and keep wearing the colours This is one reason I buy a GWS membership every year to help support them as I know I would be hard to follow them in western Sydney

Thats the thing. It isnt hard.

Hardest part is the media.

Hawthorn FC is just a Melbourne brand football club... has very little to do with the suburb of Hawthorn any more.
Obviusly but its still hawks heartland by a country mile, you just need to go into any pub around the area and it doesnt take long to realise, especially with hawthorn being a little out of town compared to the other Melbourne clubs.
