On his (Turner)day, Flower would not and did not keep up with Turner, who was also an exceptional mark for his height.
Flower was a genius player, but Turner did worry him on several occasions, enough to get him nominated on the other wing for Victoria 11 times and AA in 1979. This was at the time of Greig, Schimma, Wood, Barham, Neagle, Hawkins
Am I your uncle?Didn't see either play but am familiar with Turner being a club great. My uncle always says that he was his favourite Geelong player growing up. Also named in the clubs team of the century and played more games. Neither player won a best and fairest though...
Turner was in that level of wingers, State games, finals, impact on results- all there documented.Loved watching Ricky Barham, wingmen in those days were excitement machines and he fitted the bill. Still Mick Turner was another level up and had Barham comfortably covered career wise although they had some great individual battles which could go either way
Next level up were Flower, Schimma, Greig and Hawkins. The Rolls Royce wingers of their time
As you said above Turner could trouble anyone when he was on, even Flower. It's the same thing as When I saw Barham beat Turner when they were opposed to each other for the day. Still that doesn't make me see Barham as the same quality of wingman that Turner was.Turner was in that level of wingers, State games, finals, impact on results- all there documented.
Fair enough. As you said above Turner could trouble anyone when he was on, even Flower. It's the same thing as When I saw Barham beat Turner when they were opposed to each other for the day. Still that doesn't make me see Barham as the same quality of wingman that Turner was.
Turner also was a rally top notch winger but the 4 I mentioned Flower, Schimma, Greig and Hawkins would prevail against Turner more often than not and were more influential in matches. That's how Isee it.
Its all opinion. Turner was fantastic and as I have said rated a fair bit ahead of Barham for mine. It was a golden time for wingers. I guess if I had to compare it to some other group I might say Flower, Greig, Schimma and Hawkins were the Hird Buckley Voss Riccuitos of wingers and Turner was the Robert Harvey. Not much different but just off the absolute elite.Fair enough.
That Turner was selected for Victoria so often, with Flower, says a bit to me.
They are all greats, possibly Trner lost a bit after his ACL, and played more HFF.
But as a pure winger, at his peak, right in that top 5, imho.
Their eras were not exactly coinciding either.
Turner is on our Team of the Century wing. Its all opinion. Turner was fantastic and as I have said rated a fair bit ahead of Barham for mine. It was a golden time for wingers. Agree re opinions, there are many. In these sort of comparisons the only thing that ticks me off at times is where someone comes in and says player A was miles ahead of player B when they clearly are in the same grouping.Turner is on our Team of the Century wing.
I am biased for sure, but I still rate him as one of our all time upper echelon players, and that's ahead of many triple premiership players at Geelong.
I rated him just behind Flower on consistency, but level on brilliance. He would be more brilliant than Schimma, quicker than Hawkins.
As you say, all opinions, and we all have them.
