In todays Sunday Slimes, Adrian Barich has written an article on Jacko, basicly saying that Jacko has to weigh up his input to the team for next year. Retire or play on?.

Jacko has been a darn good player, but he is in danger of becoming a bench player or even a forward for South Freo. Barich mentions that it is better to go out on top like Nathan Burke, rather than dribbling down the other side of the mountain playing WAFL.

I think for the Eagles to go forward they need to get the next generation of KPP backs and forwards with games under their belt.

Goldenblue like a good Black Ducks supporter has commented along these lines before.

Comments?.

I think Barra has a good point.

But Jako will play on.

There was another article in the 'Slimes' with the Hawks having cap problems and possibly offerring Hay for trade.

Even on half salary going to the cap Jako will still take up $150K. With that freed up and a few other expedients we may be able to afford hay.

Bit paternalistic of Barich, I thought. His suggestion - that Jakovich is so team-oriented that he won't hear the siren when it sounds - is a contradiction, isn't it?

Aside from the fact that he's arguably earned the right to carry his bat when he bloody well chooses, Jakovich is still a valuable contributor, both on and off the field. Judd is on record as saying that he learned a lot from Peter Matera. By that token, a bloke like Doogs will learn from Jak.

And who's he keeping out of the side - Gaspar?

Jak retiring, fair dinkum. Barich should make another one of his forays onto Dockerland and suggest that Old Man Parker should retire. And let's see what sort of reaction he gets.

I think Barich is actually pretty close to the mark.

Jako has given an enormous amount to this club. He'll go down in history as one of the greatest and maybe 'the' greatest Eagle of all time.
At present, he's an okay player who has a good game every fortnight. He is probably still earning his place in the side on his merits but I doubt he'd ever be dropped because of who he is. That is not good at all. I suppose the way I see it, if Jako wasn't playing, someone like Lynch would be. They'd both probably give similar returns each week, but in terms of the future of the club, the young bloke should win out every time.

I don't want to see Jakovich to do a Mick Martyn, and I don't want it to ever get to the stage where the selectors are messing with the team structure to 'find a spot for jako'.

Its a tough one- without a doubt he could play on next year, and probably contribute. But I suppose part of me wonders whether every single game Jako plays is another game where a youngster isn't developed. Really though, its up to him to decide what is the right thing for the club, and make his decision on that basis- nobody but Jako can make that call.

Not really relevant what Barich did on a field as a player. He's in the media, and that's what he should be judged on (never liked him as a player or personality myself).

I think he has a valid point though. He's still good enough to go around, but I'd prefer to throw Glass, McDougall, and Gaspar in the deep end. I'd like to see him retire.

He does raise valid points, but it would stretch our tall resources to far if we lost McIntosh and Jakovich in the space of a season.

Even though their contributions (particularly McIntosh) were rather limited (although Jako did put in some very good games, Milli only two or three) they do add a lot of experienec to our team, both on and off the field.

But Jakovich will play on, and will play the majority of next year IMO unless age really takes the toll over the summer.

Many times this year, he has been the only player to provide a real contest at CHF.

Unfortunately for Jako while still having the desire, leadership, strength and fitness is now far too slow for todays game. Before his injury he was always on the borderline of being too big and lumbering - his knee injury just pushed him over the wrong side of the fence.
If he can focus all his energy on becoming a Carey like option up forward during the off-season, I'd give him one more year.

fair enough, But barich is an idiot of the highest order, so you have to wonder where he's coming from, and why he'd be stirring this up about a dead-set legend of your club. Jako would have to have one more year in him, then he should look at his options. Which would probably be retirement. or being traded to carlton. Kidding.

yea but when it comes to Jako, he seems to have taken to age much more quicker than a lot of othe guys have unfortantely.

It was only a couple weeks ago that he topped our possession tally and was arguably BOG, now all of a sudden he's past it.

IMO he should play on next year, even if he doesn't contribute as well as he used to he provides experience and leadership wherever he is played.

no chance he should retire / be pushed / not be here next year.

Why?

Because ATM, he is our CHF. Who would play there instead? Staker, McDougall, Gaspar? None of those players have the experience to play that spot.

When the cons are weighed up for Jako playing there, v the pro's of the others, Jako wins every time. The fact remains, the all the others should be blooded on the flanks or deeper in the forward line.

Gaspar showed promise, but never played well as a traditional CHF, he spent the majority of his time leading long on the flanks.

Jako still has it, because he has the attributes that make him the true leader of our club. Always has been, always will be.

As for the youth policy, we don't have a youth policy, that's the term thrown around be teams who can't win a premiership. On our given day this year, we would win the premiership / play against Port Adelaide bravely. We lose nothing by playing Jako in our side.

I say he should play on next year. His experience and leadership make him worthwhile at the moment, and its not like we have a huge number of options to replace him

At least one more year from Jako i think

i'm a big fan of our champions going out on a high. peter matera made the right decision in retiring at the start of the year.

that said i don't think jako is ready to retire. yeah he got injured this weekend and was on no use (not many injured players are) but the week before he was one of our best afield.

Why is playing a "bit part" as opposed to a integral part in a team so demeaning?

People talk about Champions going out on a high but that is a bit of a stretch for most. Peter Matera realistically was not in our top 3-5 for the last couple of years of his career but was none the less a valuable contributor over that time. His champion status was never called into question during that time either.

I guess no one wants to see Jako do a Mick Martyn and embarrass himself by trying to play a key role when he's not up to it. But I think if Jako can play a utility role, forward and back, when required plus provide the all important leadership around the club then surely another year isn't out of the question. He has played a couple of ordinary games this year but by and large has contributed in many more. I can see that continuing in 2004.

Totally agree? Another question that has to be asked is why do the media continually jump on Jakos back every time he has a rough match? For christ sake, he was injured anyway? He couldnt help that!

Come on Carnie you've taken your eye off the ball.

This was a question for rational discussion, the pro's and con's of Jacko continuing. If you wish to discuss the future of the Twig of Integrity, sure we'll open a new topic and discuss it rationally.

Where's Mission Man when you need him?.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't having a go at Parker or Dockerland, I was querying whether Barich might care to step over there and make the bold suggestion that another favourite son might want to give it away - rather than from the relative comfort of a column in the sunday "paper".

Strange how Barra posts on the Dockers site, but doesn't know about our Eagles nest - we need someone to drop him a line about usbarra@6pr.com.au

Re: Jakovich - he will play on next year. It's the final year of his contract and I can see him hanging up the boots once the 2004 season is over.

Does he still have a role to play? Definately! I would maybe use him when we are short of tall forwards (in a situation where McDougall, Gaspar, Gardiner) were out. However, It wouldn't be fair for Jako to expect to play the full 22 rounds next year - we need to develop and play Johnson and Hansen next year.

I think we missed Jako's fire/passion/spark whatever you want to call it Saturday night.
Someone to gee the boys up and get them going, I think it would be a mistake for him to retire, another year as the old man of the team would do him and the young tackers some good.
Maybe some of the boys(or all) need to have a bit more passion like Jako.

Dont think lack of passion or will to win was missing last week
