I'm still a relative noob at this genre but does anybody else listen to it?

I didn't mind the owen pallet song. My gay neighbour/best friend has played regina spector too much for me to not be sick of her and I have a sufjan stevens EP.

It doesn't get any better than Odessey and Oracle by The Zombies.

I could have put the whole album up. Quite simply this record is a masterpiece and a must have in anyone's collection.

To neat pick Sufjan and all the other post 90's stuff is usually called Chamber Pop with Pet Sounds, Odessey and Oracle,The Left Banke & 60's Scott Walker getting the Baroque tag. Don't really know why but it just does.

Talk Talk - The Colour Of Spring
Belle & Sebastain - If You're Feeling Sinister & Tigermilk
The Divine Comedy - Promenade, Casanova & A Short Album About Love

other essential chamber/baroque pop albums

Ahh cheers.

Yeh really not too sure on the whole classification on all of them. Just get the tag associated with a few of them.

Can you recommend some more? Especially stuff before 2000.

When I put Beach House's last album into my computer, it came up as Baroque Pop. I wouldn't have thought them that, but seeing the rest of the artists listed, they fit in really well.

So check out their album Teen Dream. Whether it's Baroque Pop or not, it's really amazingly beautiful. My favourite track of the album is Zebra.

Yeh big Beach House fan:thumbsu:

I know a bit about Baroque music and I've never understood how some artists are called baroque pop. Sufjan's definitely is though.

I had never heard of the term Baroque Pop, but I must be a fan.

In the last year, I have seen Sufjan Stevens, Rufus Wainwright, Owen Pallett, Regina Spektor and Beach House. Saw Grizzly Bear the year before and have Talk Talk and Belle and Sebastian in my collection.

From that, I seem to like it as a sub genre !

Jelly.

Saw Sufjan at the start of the year and Beach House at Laneway but would love to see Rufus Wainwright.

Secretly hoping for a Regina Spektor Splendour sideshow too..

That Sufjan gig was one of the best gigs of my life. A magnificent mix of psychedelic Flaming Lips style wimsy and Bright Eyes folkiness. It totally blew me away. Saw Beach House at Laneway too but wished I had seen the side show at the Festival of Perth. Rave Reviews.

Regina Spektor was what I expected. Quality showmanship, great voice and a terrific pianist.

Rufus did the first half of his show in mourning for his recently departed mother. He asked for no applause for the entire set. Walked on stage in a 30 metre long cape, sat at the piano and sang dirges for an hour. It was unbearable and boring. The second set, he came out in a multi coloured outfit befitting the gayest man in the world and camped it up. Absolutely brilliant performance. Introduced Hallelujah as "a little song by a largely unknown song writer that I sang in a little known film that hardly anybody saw". :thumbsu:

Trumpets and strings seems to equal a baroque tag. I know **** all about classical baroque so I have no idea about whether the tag really does fit for mos of them (and if you do know stuff about classical baroque help me. I'm interested but I have no idea where to start)

Should be noted re Talk Talk it's only Colour Of Spring for baroque. Last two are tagged with post-rock

dream pop innit

Chamber: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BJ_LGarD1oU/TSm4yr8H1HI/AAAAAAAAAII/BGIJCrwwOG8/s1600/baroque.png

I'm more familiar with most of the chamber stuff tbh so I'm not that much help. I find there's a lot of 60's albums with a baroque song but not whole albums. Love's Forever Changes opens with a song among the best baroque pop has to offer and ends with one too but in-between there's not much for example. A lot of Kinks stuff from 65 to 69 too

There's a stack of highly rated album. Paris 1919 is a great album but a lot of them I don't know much about

Baroque = Bach. He's the definition of the genre.

Extremely intricate/ornate and complex music. Strong emphasis on counterpoint - multiple separate melodies(in terms of rhythm) in all interconnect in harmony. Oh and a shitload of trills.

^The ultimate example of Baroque. Has one of the most bizzare and epic harpsichord solo's you'll hear.

I'd definitely agree with you though - the tag is just attached to anything with any remote connection to classical music.

I no doubt get my standard classical mixed up with baroque.

I love Bach. The Brandenburg Concerto is amazing. I actually love the harpsichord as an instrument. Has a glorious sound.

One album I love is Baroque Music for Trumpet by Wynton Marsalis. Masterful work from Marsalis who is generally better known for his jazz.
