What is this guy's deal?

is he re-signed for more years or is he going to be tradebait/delisted?

barry brooks will end up being delisted, he has been hyped up as a top class player but has failed to return from his knee injury, i don't think he will be given another run in the senior side and if he is resigned it will be an absolute joke.

After seeing him last year I didn't hold much hope for him. He was returning from a season ending knee injury and for a big man that was always going to have a big effect on him.

This season he has kicked 40 goals in 14 games in the VFL playing the vast majority of his games as a full forward. His mobility has improved and he can actually take a very good pack mark. Last year he couldn't even make it to a lot of the contests around the ground. On the down side he doesn't offer much when he's been given an opportunity in the ruck. And that's the position he'd be expected to play at St Kilda. Perhaps he needs an extended run in the ruck for the Scorpions but their ruckman has been fantastic this season.

Considering what we gave up for Barry and with him losing a year (in effect two years) due to the knee reconstruction I'd be happy to give him another year. Ruckman do develop much slower and it would be terrible to spend so much time developing a player only to see him realise his potential somewhere else. I've been critical of him in the past and I wouldn't say I'm confident that he'll make it at the top level but I don't want to give up on him yet.

i personally have been waiting for brooks to just into the action and become a star ruckman. We gave up a ******** load for him, hopefully another year is on the table. Hope they dont make a harsh decision based only on acklands form.

One of the problems with the VFL/AFL club affiliation is that the AFL clubs have no say in what role the AFL listed players are played. The best case is Brooks. The scorpions coach is playing him full forward, where in reality we need him to develop as a ruckman! I'd like to see him get one more full pre-season, give him every opportunity in practise matches and wizard cup games to florish in the ruck. He really is integral to our future success chances, if he has the potential we believe him to have.

From our Port Adelaide reject list, we seem to be doing pretty well, Ackland, Guerra on the good side, and Brooks on the dud side.

We need to give him another chance next year. Ruckmen take a long time to develop, and the older they are the better they are, look at Ben Hudson (sadly went down with a knee injury today). He's definitely worth another year, I'd say even two.

There is no doubt about it Brooks is going to be a super player. He has had set backs and has come from the wilderness.Another couple of years and he will be established.saints need to show some faith.

He has been playing really well for the Scorpions most weeks, yet can never understand why he hasn't been given much of an opportunity to play some AFL games this year.

He's playing full forward because coach Banfield already has one hulk of a man in Ash Eames in the ruck for the Scorpions. An interesting little piece of information about Eames, he's a former Australian strongman champion and has represented his country in this sport.

Barry Brooks was originally drafted by Port Adelaide as a forward with their first pick in the 2001 national Draft. His size and physique was considered perfect for a ruckman and that is how Port viewed his immediate future - they probably intended Barry to eventually fill the full forward position which has been a gaping hole for them as long as I can remember.

Port had a plethora of ruck stocks and saw the opportunity to trade Barry to St Kilda as a means to gain a high draft pick to top up their midfield. St Kilda likewise saw the forest and not the trees, they viewed Barry as a ruckman. The Saints had a dearth of ruckmen and needed Barry to fill that gap, which he did but not as well as was hoped. He was dropped back into the Scorps where he rucked fairly well until his injury.

I remember in an interview with one of the Saints players, who was asked about Barry Brooks, he replied "we need him to be a ruckman" implying that "OK Barry you are doing OK as a forward down there in Scorpland, but up here in Saintland we can only use you as a ruck" and that may be a fair assessment for now.

I think Barry Brooks may have a bit of talent, but he is not proving it with the bit parts he is being asked to play in the ruck and in defence on the rare occasions when he is given a go in the ones. I don't think he is as flexible as most of the footballers in our team, but he may still be a diamond in the rough if we accept that he is a specialist forward.

Just maybe Barry Brooks is the natural replacement for Fraser Gehrig, when Fraser decides to call it quits (long may that day be away please).

We need to be patient in order to find this out, but it begs the question: Is he worth the sacrifice of each of those players which must be delisted over the next two or three years while we wait? Or will he be one of those who will get the chop?

Brooks got rave reviews as a recruit when we got him. But he was gone so fast I don't think they had time to paint his name on his locker. I was always curious about what happened. Thanks for the info.
As for the others Guerra seems no different than we had him, including off-field from what I hear.
Ackland was a great grab for you, good to see him doing well. Heavens knows why he wouldn't step up here.
What will you give us for Salopek?

You've pretty much answered your own question.

Eames has had a fantastic season in the ruck and fully deserves to be the #1 ruckman for the Scorpions. Whenever Brooksy has been given a run in the ruck he has struggled. On the other hand in most games this season he has provided us with a real option up forward. He presents well and takes a nice contested mark. Unfortunately the reality is that while he has kicked goals for the Scorpions, he's not cut out to be a key forward at AFL level. Besides, if we were to give him a chance, who would drop out of the forward line?

Riewoldt?
Gehrig?
Koschitzke?
Hamill?

I don't see him making it as a forward at AFL level so it's in the ruck where he has to make his name. Sadly he struggles to be competitive in the ruck at VFL level.

Like I said a couple of weeks ago I'd be prepared to give him another year on the list because we've invested so much into him. I'd love to be wrong but I don't see him adding to his 6 games.

sometimes they just need a change of club and a good kick up the backside.
What's the deal with Salopek?? i remeber we were keen on him. I don't often see him playing for port, but i thought injuries were a big problem, will you guys hang onto him or do you think he's going to be trade bait?

yes - we could trade him and we know the pies & blues are snifing around. he was a pick 5 for us but we would accept your 1st pick e.g. pick 14 if you finish 4th

Port had Pick 8 which was reduced to Pick 6 after the Carlton penalty which they used to gain Salopek. The reason I am sure of this is because we traded it to you as part of the price we paid for Barry Brooks.

It was quite ironic at the time because we had Pick 3 which we had earmarked for Salopek until the Carlton penalty came into effect. We then had by default gained Pick 1 which we used for Goddard.

So Pick 18 then.
