Why? I've never heard this. Sounds like prejudice.

Maybe its is just the conservative industry I belong to (finance), but wise cracks from partners to junior staff sporting beards are common, and the offending beard is usually gone by the next day.

What about Indians and moustaches?

I grew up in the 70s when Aussie machoness was at it's peak, squash was just a cover for swingers parties and all our cricketers had moustaches. I just assumed the Indians got in on the act in the 70s and have been a little slow to move on. Some of them are still wearing socks and sandals FFS.

But an Indian colleague of assures me that from the beginning of time the Indian man just likes moustaches. It seems we copied them.

Ban no. Seriously frowned upon, yes.

Case 1.

Was working at a huge corporate. 26yo colleague grew a beard. Our boss, a female, sort of joked around and said it wasn't doing anything for his love life (he was single). She even offered to shave it off and he accepted.

It was all in good fun and she managed to do it very diplomatically, but I suspect she wanted her team to uphold a certain image.

Case 2

I worked with a "Mediterranean Appearing" guy. He had a goatee. His boss recommended him shave it off as to not look so intimidating.

Case 3

Same place. An Indian guy who had a non customer facing role started work. He had a moustache. A colleage told him that he should get rid of the moustache.

There is definitely facial hair discrimination going on in the professional environment.

Yep, similar stories here.

In one instance, a partner said to a junior staff member that it was probably OK for him to sport a beard on his first day back from holidays. The implication being that the beard should be gone by the next day, and it was.

Another instance was not so subtle. A partner sent his PA to the local shop to buy a razor and shaving cream, which was deposited on the offending staff members desk by 10am. Hint was taken, beard gone by 10.15am.

That's over the top interference in an individual's preferences!
It's raised the contrarian in me! I'm up for a mo as of now - bugger waiting for November!!!!

In pursuit of the hirsute!!
(distant sound of bugle charge....)

Christ, I'm glad I don't work in an industry where someone would call me up on what I'm wearing. Especially if it was the sort of industry where people would make a fuss over it when you never see clients/customers. Sheer lunacy.

Hey, I just didn't feel like wearing pants today, alright?

I wore a beard in the 90s, for about 7 - 8 years. A female friend told me it made me look like a university professor. It was gone the next day.

Don't have any friends who are female, but a few years ago my mid-life crisis beard disappeared immediately after the missus protested and withdrew certain conjugal rights.
