While I was disappointed at the way we finished season 2003, I've had time to calm down and think more clearly.

1. I think the 2 finals this week were almost decided by the weather conditions. I'm not saying this was the only reason but Essendon are so used to playing in the pristine conditions of Telstra Dome that the weather and state of the ground last night favoured Port considerably. I think you will find that Essendon's form this year has not been great in less than perfect outdoor conditions. As well, Essendon were coming back from Subiaco

2. Similarly, the 35 degree heat and whatever humidity gave Brisbane a huge advantage. It takes time to adjust to this type of Brisbane weather but all our players could do from the time they landed was to spend time in their airconditioned hotel rooms due to the heat. I would be interested to hear how supporters who travelled to Qld found the adjustment as we went to Qld a few years ago, left Adelaide at 10 degrees and arrived in Brisbane at 33 degrees, and could hardly function for a few days.

3. No interstate team has won a final at the Gabba and last year we were absolutely creamed by about 12 goals but the difference was that we had a second chance. This year we lost by 7 goals although I thought our early attitude left a bit to be desired. The one venue I didn't want to play at in the finals was the Gabba.

4. Despite the doom and gloom about our team, we have finished 5th despite a dreadful run of injuries which hardly gave us a stable team to work with, 2 games in Perth within 4 weeks, decimated by a viral infection which was in the club for 3 weeks and we still finished above 11 other teams.

5. Had just one result of the St Kilda, Collingwood, Hawthorn or Freo games been different, we may well have been playing in a preliminary final next week and depending on the Draw for next year ( surely it couldn't get much worse than this year ) I think we can still be in the top 6 teams.

6. Having said all that we still have problems.

a. I don't think we will ever win a premiership while Gary Ayres is coach as he doesn't have the coaching smarts in close matches nor important games which require the coach to react to adverse situations.

b. Our players need to work more on their skills, especially handball which seemed to get us into more trouble rather than getting us out of a tight situation or setting up play.

c. I think this year some of our second tier players went backwards eg Bode, Stenglein, Doughty, Ladhams and it's up to the coaching staff to work through this as they should all be excellent players

d. We don't appear to have physically strong players who can take contested marks etc, we seem to be bumped off the ball too easily. It seems our coaches have decided to have more aerobic players but we have to mould ourselves on Brisbane's program which has strong but quick and mobile players.

e. We need to bite the bullet and give the likes of Reilly, Schuback, Bock, Parker a reasonable trial to see what they're made of. We don't seem to bring the young players through at all. When is the last time we has a Rising Star nomination? However, don't compare us to St Kilda who have been given an armchair ride to reward their club's incompetence.

Sorry for the long post but wanted to put some of my thoughts on paper to help get over our loss on Friday

Cheers,

Good post. I like your line about St Kilda! Special!

I think we have a lot to look foward to next year, and im anticipating seeing some new faces at the club that could play maybe 100- 150 servicable games for us.

I saw the blokes come in at the airport yesterday and they all looked pretty upset. Hope they can turn it around next year.

Your point about a Rising Star nomination is a good one.

Stiffy should have been nominated last year. The fact that we didnt have a nominee this year highlights the fact we need to give our young fellas a go. Rutten's 3 goal debut would have been our best chance for a mention.

If Smart retires this week, they should promote Parker and give him the # 7 jumper. I think that would be a great way to start 2004.

No real positives to come from this season as a team... we're at that stage where we're banking on Premierships with the talent we have. We finished sixth in the minor round and fifth overall after a 7 goal smashing by Brisbane in finals.

Unacceptable.

Individually, there were some great signs and some worrying signs. Great signs:

The current ability and future potential of Johncock looks to be limitless.

Tyson Edwards had a fantastic season.

Mark Ricciuto brought up his sixth AA guernsey and will continue to go from strength to strength.

Worrying signs:

McLeod... Geez... gave us nothing in the second half of the season. Needs to pull everything out next season.

Goodwin. Where's this bloke gone? He broke his wrist on the MCG fence sure... but a very very poor season going by the standards Goody has set for himself.

Fullback/Tall defenders. While Nathan Bassett is a sturdy honest player and gives his all, why is it we have to have a 34 yo in Nigel Smart load up on the likes of Matthew Lloyd? Why do we have tall/small Benny Hart loading up on Chris Tarrant? Why does Ian Perrie get called on to play on Alistair Lynch?

We need to bring Parker and/or Bock through NOW or recruit a kickarse tall/key defender.

Rookies? We all know the problem here.

Bickley - sad to see him go :(

Ayres - Tactically inept. No moves. No answers. Afraid to gamble after the team takes the field, but banks on 100/1 longshots before it.

Make no mistake, these past 2 seasons were golden and wasted opportunities to win flags... and at this stage with our list a year older and Bicks retiring, we're further away from a flag than any point since 2000.

We haven't been good enough these past 2 years, so there's really no excuses, but at the same time there's no doubt we haven't had much luck, which you really need to make a GF and to win a flag (particularly if you aren't actually a standout side like we are).

I think there's still next year in term's of our window of opportunity, and I take heart from Brisbane's journey, where they made the prelim in 1999 but were curtailed by injuries and a rampant North, in 2000 they fell backwards and were flogged by Carlton in a semi, before.....well, we all know what happened next.

Of course, we don't have Voss, Akermanis, Black, Leppitsch, et al. and Ayresy is our coach, so it's all highly unlikely but hey, let's be positive :p

Ayres needs to become more flexible in making moves where one of our players are getting a bath or 2004 will be his last year at AFC. An opposition player may still continue to dominate, but at least try something different, when a matchup isn't working.

My main issue with the use of the handball is to another team mate who is under pressure. In this case, kick the damn ball! Also, need to improve our filed kicking into the forward 50m.

Very key point you make. With the loss of Sugar, it was crucial these players, along with Reilly improve in 2003 for us to be a success. Unfortunately they went backwards & our midfield struggled relying on too few.

Thought our tackling & pressure in close was OK overall. However, we do have a problem with contested marks. Kenny is our only KPP who is decent. Where we are really lacking is with a ruckman taking plenty of marks.

I agree that we need to develop some of our younger talent in 2004. This will mean trading away some of our fringe players to make room for them in the team.

Some positives in looking ahead:

1. Shirley - This bloke has been a revalation. Came back from the brink to being consistently in our better players. Looking forward to seeing whether he can step up further in 2004.

2. Johncock - We all know this guy will be a star. 2004 should be the year the rest of the football world learn it the hard way.

3. Macca and Goody - Both had years they'd rather forget, but I reckon this will be a short term blip. Watch out in 04 for these blokes!

4. Welsh and Stevo. Can hardly have worse luck and we all know these blokes can really play. Also, can Perrie take the next step?

5. The appearance of rookies. If the coaching staff have their heads screwed on, 2004 will see the emergence of Reilly, Rutten, Hentschel, Schuback and Parker, plus maybe some other surprises. If these guys turn out to be half as good as we believe, then the future will be pretty bright.
