Does anyone have any idea when footy shorts came out with elastic or some other means to keep them up, i have seen plenty of old football photos with footy shorts being held up by belts.

What year did belts go out or roughly what year, i am trying to roughly date a photo.

Thanks in advance. :)

The belts were worn with the full-length knickerbockers and were phased out around the time of the 1908 National Carnival:

At that point the first 3/4 length buttoned knicks were introduced. Some clubs/state teams took longer to switch than others but they were virtually gone by WWI.

The first baggy footy shorts came in mid-1920s, were widely adopted by 1930 and were standard uniform by the time of the 1933 national carnival.

Hope this helps with the photo!

The above "buckle photo" is from the 1896 Carlton team photo that probably played Fitzroy on the MCG.
Can't see the Richmond seconds buckle the same as this one.

Blueseum is trying to identify the umpire pictured in this image to pin point the match.
If any one can confirm this is Joe Shaw or maybe umpire McCoy?
If it is Joe Shaw then the match is the one against Fitzroy.
Regards
