Ben Cousins

I've gone cold on him.

I'm pretty sure I've been all for it in the past, but I'm over him now.

I don't doubt that if he comes back he'll be able to play at the top level.
I don't have any concerns that he'll be a negative influence on the playing group.
But what I do question is what we would be able to achieve while he is here.

If it gets to pick 5 in the PSD and we can take Cousins or O'Keefe, R'OK is a no-brainer for mine.

If O'Keefe isn't in the PSD, then I still wouldn't take Cousins.

Put simply, we've been down for 4 years now and clearly going the slow rebuild (even if maybe Sheedy cost us a year by his drafting choices).

To take Cousins now, to me, shows a lack of belief from the club, that what we have at the club already can win a premiership in a few years time.

I would consider Cousins for 2 reasons

1) He is an exemplary trainer and could teach the young guys on how hard you need to work
2) He may assist in developing our young mids.

the good about cousins is he'll really be looking to prove himself next year so he should play a lot of good footy. but we need to be thinking long term

Don't want him.

We know Cousins was a super fit freakish athlete in his day and has kept himself in great shape over this whole ordeal but we must remember he has effectively not played football for 2 seasons now.

Even the best of the best struggle to make an impact after coming back from such a long layoff - see Michael Jordan's ill fated comeback attempt with the Washington Wizards after a few years away. It was painful watching a legend go out like that...

I reckon he's past it. Let the Saints pick him up because he'd fit in with the 'player recycling plant' they seem to have going on down at Moorabbin.

prehaps.

Even If we were keen, Collingwood seem to have wrapped him up. Even still, I'd rather O'keefe over Cousins. ROK barely injured through out his carrer, better role model, No need to worry about off field issues and of the two, I believe he has the most upside to him.

But yet again, I don't think we should even worry about cousins, even if intrested.

We have Mc Veigh for that.

Cuzz will be 31 before the season starts & the fact that in his last season he did a hammy, which plagues older players, that is a huge risk, plus his off field crap, not worth it, keep him away from our club.

One of the reasons people were calling for Sheeds to be sacked, was because he kept drafting older players trying to stay in the top 8, so if we go back to drafting older players who are a risk, we may as well have kept Sheeds.

Hopefully Knighter will stick with the recruiting young players for a successful future. :thumbsu:

I'd say no to Cuz only because he probably wouldn't be around for our next shot at a flag. So why waste a spot on him when we could pick up a youngster that may become a gun

He'd be better for us than O'Keefe but I think our list is at the wrong stage of development to take him on.

Love watching him play though so would be rapt to get him. Absolute champion on the field.

Be awesome taking on Carlton with him and Judd going head to head, not that the rivalry needed anymore spice.

And McVeigh missed 8 games in 2008.

No thanks, put simply it goes against our policy of developing youth.

Not to mention all the other factors.

How many hammy's did we have last year?

Should we delist everyone that did one?

This is not a valid reason for mine. Age and off field issues, sure but I wish you'd stop trying to peddle this hamstring rubbish.

Would be delighted to pick Cousins up. He would be more than serviceable for the next 2 years. Getting O'Keefe is not much use considering we have a decent forward line with neagle, gumbleton, lucas and lloyd. Our midfield is not great and Cousins woud certainly fix part of the problem.

Very interesting observation BacharHouli_43, but if I put on the hat of an opposition supporter I could make a strong case that Lucas and Lloyd are getting on in years while Neagle, and Gumby especially have shown nothing!

Cousins would be a waste of a spot, but luckily we're not interested! :thumbsu:

Magpies out of Cousins race

COLLINGWOOD has withdrawn from the race to recruit Ben Cousins, leaving St Kilda as the hot favourite to secure him if the AFL clears him to resume his career.

Cousins' manager, Ricky Nixon, confirmed last night that the Magpies had informed him that they would not be pursuing Cousins in the draft — a decision believed to based on a raft of reasons, including the club's preference for youth, concerns about injury and his well-documented issues with drugs and even the potential impact on sponsorship in the current environment.
