one player isnt just gonna get you guys into a grand final. plus he's in his 30's and could stuff up again, leave him for st kilda and brissy to fight over:D

Short answer: No.

Slightly longer answer: Definitely not.

Brief answer: Not what we're looking for. Youth/players that are capable of contributing in the long term are what we need.

Do I need to elongate my answer further?

Elongate or Elaborate, that is the question.

Yeah if you could please J, not exactly sure where you sit on the issue:D

*waits for some of the Carlton posters to claim that because Judd was trying to get away from Cousins they shouldnt take him* When in reality, they were and still are good mates... its just Judd shy's away from it to lose his good image he has going.

Huge fan of Cousins (far and away my favourite non-Blue prior to 07).

While I'd love to see him playing AFL again, he isn't someone we should be looking at, given his age and the state of our list (I heard he's had issues off the field, too).

HOWEVER, if the price he nominated was cheap (<~250k), then I'd be rapt if the club took the punt. Let's not forget that Ben Cousins was as fit as any player in the game, and I maintain he was the best midfielder in the competition between 2004-2006, Chris Judd included.

His ability to lift when the game was on the line, willing his way to five, six, seven vital touches with 10 minutes of the game remaining, was awe inspiring.

Of course, I expect he'll put a price of a bit over 250k on his head. With effectively two years out of the game, there's a question mark over whether his body will be able to handle the rigours of AFL footy. He is the wrong side of 30. He'll draw a negative stigma to the club, and there's always the risk of relapse.

Can he get back to his best? Who knows. But if the price is cheap enough, punting on a champion footballer in Cousins could be a masterstroke. I'd imagine he gets through the first season alright, has 3 or 4 years left in him.

Lets keep our barrel of apples free from decease and not put in the "bad apple" which may spoil the bloody lot. My thoughts are; no bloody way, we don't need him, we don't want him. "You reap what you sow!" If we take him we will send the wrong message to all our younger players that you can get away with almost anything if you are a great player.
So, no, no, noooooooo!
Other than that I don't have a firm opinion!!!!!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

That would be a massive surprise, given that I'm confident he will actually be taken in the late rounds of the national draft.

No thanks.

I think this could go either way with the bad press issue.

If he goes to the saints and has a fairly big positive impact in games won, then he may well be given heaps of plaudits for "overcoming adversity" (admittedly by his own making).

The Sts will also gain rave reviews for giving him another chance and helping him through the tough times. So in a way it could be seen, on the surface, to be a great move.

on the other hand the down side could get really ugly, and the distraction for a young team particularly, could be very unwanted.

I think that it is best to avoid the potentially ugly mess, even if the upside could win us more games (speculatively speaking) because we have already got enough issues (Salary cap breaches, previous unstable board, Pratt/Visy, large debt, bad TD deal etc) to contend with for a young group and a club getting out of a very bad patch.

We as a club are now beginning to progress towards being a powerhouse club again and we have a core of brilliant young players, who are beginning to gain an understanding of playing for the jumper, each other and winning. Let's not cloud that with quick fixes or distractions.

Cousins (and good luck to him) has been a selfish guy who put himself before club/teammates and even let friends (girlfriends) take the wrap for him beofre he even admitted he was guilty. We dont want or need players at the club like that.

Even if he has move forward (and there must be some doubt, given the Pies' about face), he is 30+ and would take up a valuable spot on the list.

In summary, let the saints take the punt, they are a poor soulless club with a losing culture. We will beat them with or without cousins next year! ;)

Does he have a suspect hammy?

Still, he is one amazing physical specimen, and I wouldn't be surprised if he did a Crawf or Harvs and played for many years yet.

The guy can run all day.

This is true, but it really does depend on what his fitness regime has been like whilst out of the game.

The first thing to go, if you miss such a long time out, is your exceleration of the mark and sprinting speed.

The other thing that causes problems is the diminished ability to take the physical stuff, the bumps and the hard tackles. Thats one of the reasons why players who are out for 8-10 weeks need to become "match
fit" again.

If he has kept these things up then he should be fairly ok, but still he was always a dedicated trainer, so maybe will be better than the other players who have taken a year out of the game and tried to come back.

Lets not forget he will have had nearly 2 years away from the game when/if he returns.

If Carlton picked up Cousins and he getting 30 touches a week and tearing sides apart with Judd and Carlton were 7&3 at round 10 , you blokes would be bragging about it was the best recruit of the year.

It would be just like other clubs chosing not to pick up Fev due to is off field antics if he was up for trade yet you guys are happy for him to kick a ton at Carlton but still bag him when he stuffs up.

Life and sport is full of different unique individuals, you take the good with the bad and learn to get by the best as possible.

All well and good Cousins could play another 4 years easy just like Bradley did.

Put it this way, if you owned a Company and one of your sales reps was earning you 500,000 a year and was clean as a whistle and another sales rep was earning you 1,000,000 year but was a bit dodgey and you knew he was pocketing 100,000 himself yet was still earning you 400,000 more than the trusted sales rep, which sales rep would you rather work at your Company long term?

I know which one i would want.

You're joking of course.
