This thread was bound to come onto the board at some stage. Said on Sports Tonight last night, Hart had spoken to 3 interested clubs, one is brisbane and I couldn't imagine one of the other two not to be us. Similar to the Mark Graham pick up except the fact that Hart is not yet a hack and plans to play a couple more years...

Anyone think we'll have a nibble?

No chance.

Got rid of Kellaway - similiar sort of player. We wont go for anyone who's old and slow ala Solomon or anyone like that.

Where is this ready-made key backman we so sorely need going to come from? Gaspar isn't really on top of his game and Hall has never been on top of his game. We need depth!

That is a good point about Kellaway. However, I would still rate Hart higher.

mark graham was the worst pick ever, at that stage we were on par with the hawks for rebuilding but then when we picked up this hack FROM THEM

he played well but i wouldve rather a project FB who couldve taken gaspar's position next yr

ben hart no ****ing way

Mark Graham was more than handy. You have no idea.

no **** sherlock, i said he played well

but where is he now? i wouldve rather got a young defender who wouldve been 21 now and taken gaspar or halls spot

we did get a young defender that year but he did his knee last season

We should have more then.

Draft young players. We wont win a premiership in 2 years.

i think we will grab polak and perry during trade week

but if hart came cheap i mean really cheap like adelaide gave him to us and their 5th round pick for nothing( i wish )
you would look at getting him just to teach the youngsters
he is a 2 time premiership backman so why wouldnt you want him to teach youngsters and i think he is prob a bit quicker than kellaway
it will probaly be a no but you never say never

If we were to pick up Ben Hart it would make ultimate hypocrites out of wallace and miller.

We wont be picking up Ben Hart.

Personally I think we should have kept Kellaway but anyway.

i thought this board was better than the joke that is punt road end but its just all the same crap

Re-Draft Mark Graham.

OF all the players who retired at the end of 2005, were delisted or got injured during 2006, Graham might well have been the guy we miswsed the most in terms of his value to the team and the role he fulfilled.
The guy was a rock down back for us and I am convinced..as I was then...that he should have played on one more year.

There was that guy that did OK in Graham's spot. What was his name again? Something like Pat Bowden?

Cutting Kellaway is about opening up a spot for Oakley-Nicholls, Casserley, McGuane, Moore and Jackson to fight for (if they are still there).

In all probability Deledio has been earmarked for the spot. It is his natural position and he did well at the end of the season.

Smalls - Newman, Raines, White, Hartigan
Mids - Bowden, Bowden, Deledio, Oakley-Nicholls, Jackson, Casserley
Talls - Gaspar, Hall, Schulz, Moore, Thursfield, McGaune

Reasonably easy to come up with a group of six from that lot. If we can find a quality tall to bump Gaspar and Hall down a rung then we should. But other than that we are pretty well covered. We certainly don't need Hart added to that mid-sized defender group.

Hart can play tall as well.

If we look at the list of talls there, we have an old bloke in his last year in Gaspar, a somewhat capable player in Hall, a natural forward in Schulz, a bloke on the verge of being delisted in Moore, a good young backman in Thursfield but is recovering from a long term injury and an unproven player in McGuane. This is just my opinion but surely we don't have FB and CHB possies covered, particularly CHB stands out to me. Bowden should not be forced to hold that position down and could be better used elsewhere.

I suppose if we do find a quality tall to bump Gaspar and Hall down a rung we will be set for next year but we will still have little depth. IMO next year McGuane or Moore (if he's still there) must step up to provide enough cover.

That's not too pessimistic is it?

Key backman with pick #26 (Ideally Nathan Brown) would contribute enormously to the future of our defense and with the likely arrival of Perry we would have appropriate cover and therefore would not even need to consider Hart.

But so can Joel Bowden. Hart can play tall but not as a genuine FB or CHB. Hasn't done that for years. He wouldn't be adding depth to the tall defender group, he'd be adding competition to the mid-size defender group.

Don't disagree at all. The tall defenders look very ropey. In a perfect world Gaspar, Hall and Moore would have been surplus to requirements and Schulz would be up forward. This ain't a perfect world and recruting Hart doesn't improve the situation.

Then we recruit in order to make our backline as perfect as can be. Like I said earlier Perry and an 18 yo ready made backman with pick 26 and we'll be on the right track.

Just a general note, I've never said I wanted Hart, I did start the thread but I don't recall ever saying I wanted Hart.

Definately agree with all that. Our backline (in particular KP backmen) is our weakest 'area' at the moment, and needs lots of work.

Our forward line is pretty solid with Richo, Tambling, Schulz, Pettifer and people such as Simmonds, P. Bowden drifting in. Also, Browny will be back next year which can only strengthen it even further. We also have some young forwards who i would be hoping will continue to improve this year (Hughes, McGuane, Pattison).

Our midfield is on the rise, but still needs some work, and thats why even though our main priority is a KP backman, i think we should take a midfielder (Proud/Selwood) with our first pick. We have a very young quick midfield, but IMO still need another hard inside midfielder, so we can win more clearances and put more pressure on opposition teams.

If we are able to recruit a tall defender (Polak/Thornton/Perry) that would be great, as they would release some strain on Bowden and enable him to be even more creative and damaging. Selecting a KPP with our second pick also seems like a sensible thing to do, particularly with our leaky defense and Gaspar very near the end.

Dont think we need Hart IMO.
