Ben Johnson... Can he play?

Yes he can play.

It took a while for him to get up to speed after an interrupted pre-season but he is a new player compared to the start of the year.

He has become more precise with his disposal and has a new dimension with his Lonie-like goalkicking.

He still has some stuff to work on(marking/body on body contests) but it's great to see him play some good football.

Yes, Benny can play!

And this isn't exactly the first time he's shown it - I remember him playing similarly a season or two ago before being suspended. Frankly, I like the boy - he's in my top 22.

No hes just having a good time of it. I still cant understand how Johnno can constantly get 120 minutes every game, every week whilst blokes like Didak, Cole and Betheras have to sit out time on the bench, AND blokes like Scotland and McGough cant even get a game.

By the way, i do rate Johnno, and im glad hes having a good run, but i still cringe everytime hes doing one of his sweeping drooping clearances from the backline into the arms of an opposition player. As hes Malthouses pet child he will always be favoured for maximum game time, and i doubt he'll ever get dropped unless he really ****ed up like kicking the ball into Buckleys head or something.

Fast strong young bloke with a great attitude and he's learning to play. I don't think he's ever going to be a "magic hands and feet" Jimmy Hird type, his disposal at best is average. Just up to scratch with his marking, but his tackling and spoiling is enthusiastic and usually effective.

Malthouse will always go for team spirit and hard work over natural footballers and talent, so he's a fixture in the side.

Just as matter of interest, are there people here who think no matter how good or bad a player is, if they wear a Collingwood jumper we must only say nice things about them.

I'm not having a go at you Joel, but I have never read anything from you where you say that Collinwood player X or player Y is poor, or worse, shouldn't be in the team at all.
I'm particularly referring to Kinnear here.
Sorry if I have missed somewhere that you have handed out a bagging along the way.

Are there others here that think any form of criticism of Collingwood is taboo?

I'm the kind of person who will rarely, if ever, strongly criticise a player, but I'm not going to jump down another person's throat for doing it unless I strongly disagree with what they're saying. I try really hard to find any player's strong point ... and most of them, yes, even Kinnear, have one.

LOL! I have actually been accused by a Magpie supporter on Nick's for saying a player was ****, when I hadn't even said anything remotely like that.

Anyway in regards to this, personally, I don't believe players should be immune from criticism. There have been countless debates about this on Nick's, and its just about split half and half in regards to who believes some sort of criticism should be allowed and those who think not. So much so, that each side of the debate gives up in the end.

I guess...I just try to watch my mouth these days (or what I write on the BBs) because criticising players has the potential for people to dislike you and start unnecessary arguments. I guess, I've become sick of having the same old argument in regards to criticism.

If you re-read my post you will find that I said the 'the last couple of weeks', it is kind of an underhanded way of saying, he didnt't play too flash before that.

Having said that, I usually don't openly criticise players. Moreover, what I dislike is when people come out say, 'look at how good player X is playing now, I told you all that he is a champion'. This comment usually comes after Player X has played one good game out of the last 5 or 6 and has an ordinary season, and often the next game is just as ordinary as the rest have been. Do you understand what I mean by that?

Ben is very under-rated at his ability to break lines. He can be a long kick and we all know he has speed and likes to run with the ball. If only he could kick like Buckley!

cannot agree with you more about his ability to pick up a loose ball and run to create.....

There was a thread about Johnno only 5-6 weeks ago, with most wishing his removal from the side. I was not one.

I've always liked his "straight at it" approach.

150-200 game player !!

I wrote a couple of weeks ago how BJ's clanger count was twice the team average. I think that is an indictment on how he plays. He has a "Get it and Kick" approach, reminicent of 70's or 80's playing.
I watch him very closly at games (and I go every week we play in Vic) he rarely looks up the ground for a player who is or might be free. He nearly always kicks to a contest or worse to a team mate who is out numbered.
He turns the ball over more than any other player in the team.

However, the last two weeks he has played well.
He does have good speed and he can lay a good tackle but like someone else said, every time he gets the ball, I look at how many of the opposing players are lose, because he turns it over so often.

Oddly enough, I think he would be a better "on baller" a bit like Lica because of his speed. I think he would be good running out of the centre, of course the problem would still be delivery to one of our forwards.

He has made some terrible glaring decisions during a lot of games but MM sticks with him so I guess he is doing something right.

He's apparently very diligent when it comes to working on his weaknesses, Ive heard stories of him always going to see MM personally after games where he has made blunders and Gavin Brown seems to give him wraps thus the #26 he got.
