Collingwood veteran Ben Johnson is set to miss 3-4 weeks of the pre-season campaign after suffering a hamstring injury during training at Gosch’s Paddock on Wednesday.

Scans confirmed a grade one strain for 30-year-old, who has played 224 games for the Magpies and is entering his 13th season at the elite level.

“Unfortunately for Ben scans confirmed a hamstring strain, and he will now go through a rehab program with the aim of being back into full training within 3-4 weeks,” Collingwood director of football Geoff Walsh said.

Beat me to it matt :)

Man, 1st bad omen of the year. Injuries starting again. Not too fussed that it's BJ though, given we have walk-in replacements in Buckley and Clarke.

Clarke is basically a like for like replacement, would feel more comfortable with him than Buckley.

Haha, I happened to be on Twitter when the Pies official account announced it, disappointing news, but hopefully he's back by round 1 or 2.

We had our one good year without injuries (2010) I think our run of good luck is over. 2009 was a shocker if i recall rightly. Losing pendles with a broken leg killed us.

Although im disappointed with these injuries im looking forward to seeing some of the young kids fill these spots.
I have a good feeling about Marley Williams.....
If you pay attention to the videos of the camp they had in Tassie a few weeks ago he seemed to be fearless even when the club tricked them into thinking they were going to go skydiving Williams did not seemed fussed where as the others seemed very shakey. what does this actually mean? nothing really but i got the feeling this kid isnt going to be scared playing with the bigboys. Just my gut feel, but i could be very wrong.

Fair enough. Yeh i have seen his video package. We have a few untried players that can hopefully fills spots of the older players if we get more injuries but as a side going for a premiership this year we wouldn't want to get too many more or it could be curtains for the flag.

Both Didak and Johnson will be right come season start time you would imagine. They may be held back to ensure that they are fully fit before getting senior spots.

Last year Didak was worse off than he is now. He has a much better fitness base with the work he has done to date.

Reid and N Brown look to be there abouts and will play some preseason matches before the season.

Johnson is unfortunate timing however we have Marty Clarke as a ready replacement for him plus Goldsack who is fringe.

Last season we had lost Nathan Brown for the season by this time so we are in a much stronger spot. Granted we would hope that we don't get any key player serious injuries but right now there shouldn't be too many concerns

Bad luck for Johnson.

Good news for our fringe players.

Injuries to established players early in the year didn't hurt Hawthorn too badly last season.

In a way it was a blessing in disguise as they managed to bring on some really talented players.

Not suggesting we're having it as bad as Hawthorn.

Hopefully the injuries to Johnson and Didak provides a similar chance for some of our younger guys to establish a role in the team and strengthen us as a side.

I wouldn't say Didak is better off this year at all. He will lose all of his fitness because he won't be able to run for what they are now saying 6-8 weeks. He is back to sqaure 1 and another year older.
I would have thought Clarke replaces Davis not Johnson. We need to basically find replacements for up to 4 senior premiership players now.L brown Davis Johnson and Didak. You can't replace them overnight not sure we have adequate replacements for them either.. so i ask myself will the team improve from 2010 with those outs.. i say no.

Didak has been training for months including going to Arizona. The 4 weeks or whatever the club said was the time it'd take him to get back to full training, but he'll be running straight lines/be on the bike/swimming before then. His fitness will take a small hit but it won't be wiped out unless the injury lingers or he picks up a new injury.

Who is now saying 6-8 weeks?

I know that SEN reported something like this however everything else I've read has indicated that he is responding well to treatment and is walking around quite freely at the moment and quite positive.

It is also commonly stated that the fitness base of the players is built up mostly pre-Christmas break with this time of year being more about refining game plans and touch. If Didak is sitting on a couch for 4 weeks then sure he may be back at square one however I would imagine that probably isn't the case.

Didak is 28 and still has some time at his peak yet before getting past it.

Johnson is getting on so if he is more likely to have soft tissue concerns. A 4 week injury (to full fitness) with 7 weeks before round 1 should hopefully mean that we don't lose him for the season. But let's say for a minute that Johnson is out for the year. That still leaves us with:

Shaw, N Brown, Tarrant
Maxwell, Reid, Harry O

Then there is still Toovey, Goldsack and Clarke to come in.

Leon didn't play in the premiership 22.

Leigh Brown seemed to be everyones whipping boy, but he had a very good year in 2010. It we be interesting to see how we approach the back-up ruckman role.

Dids and BJ will both be available come round 1. They may get held back to ensure they have regained some of the fitness they may lose between now and then. I would have only played them both in 2 NAB Cup games anyway.

All in all, we need guys fit and firing come late in the year/finals time. The older guys need to be managed throughout the season to ensure that. This could be a blessing in disguise. It's a long season.

Not sure we will ever play N brown Tarrant Maxwell and Reid or Goldsack together when most teams struggle to have 1 tall up front let alone 4 or 5 Unless you delevop one of them in to a second ruck.

I don't think Didak well regain his fitness from this lay off. I have heard its a lot more serious than the club is letting on.If its not 6-8 he will be back by round 1 considering its 50 days away but i highly doubt he will be and the rumours are true.

The tall defensive line has worked well for us. Shaw and O'Brien have been our smallest defenders for years. It works because a bunch of our taller guys have the flexibility to play small(er) i.e. Maxy, Goldsack, Toovey, Tarrant. It may be tall but it covers most forward lines pretty effectively including their smalls and gives us a great advantage in the air. I've always felt that the ability of a tall Toovey to play small and a small O'Brien to compete against bigger opponents has been critical to this flexibility.
