Re: Matthews retires

Ben Matthews today announced his retirement after 198 games.
Great bloke ,great career.

Good on him, congratulations.
Great Swans clubman, long may he look upon his premiership medal and smile.
And even further credit for what he's done as a senior player in the seconds this season. A great Sydney man.

I caught the back end of a channel 10 news report saying that Ben Mathews has retired after 198 AFL games. He has been a great servant of the club and it is sad to see him go. He is exactly what the Swans represent. He isnt flashy but he gets the job done.

Fairwell Ben and thankyou for the memories.

Re: Matthews retires

Congratulations on a fantastic career Benny. A personal favorite of mine over the years and a player that gave 100% every time he took the field. 200 games or not he won't be forgotten any time soon. :thumbsu:

Re: Matthews retires

Good on him for doing the right thing for the club.

1/3...

Everitt's should come tomorrow, and then the snowball will bring on Leo's announcement in the hours before the game on Saturday.

You're obviously heartbroken

Re: Matthews retires

Heh, sorry, I did come off a bit cold-hearted. I really am grateful for his performance for the club, and he's a solid player. I got a hand-shake from him last year after the Hawks game because it was Father's Day, and that was a great moment.

I really do respect him as a player, he's one of those players who doesn't draw a lot of attention and just gets the job done, and I feel for him being stuck on 198 games - milestones are always great.

That said, I do respect him for hanging up the boots, he really couldn't offer us anything else, and has started the process of clearing out the cobwebs. By doing this, it puts pressure on blokes like Leo and Everitt who may be considering it, and now with him taking the lead, they'll be more likely to make up their mind. That's what I meant, though I know it sdounded a bit coldhearted. :o

Re: Matthews retires

SouthSwans hasn't posted in this thread, yet ;)

Ben has been a great clubman, and at his peak was a solid defensive midfielder as well as a reliable shot for goal. He was a pretty important cog in the wheels of our 2005 premiership team. His contribution to the ressies this year has already been noted here, wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Re: Matthews retires

*from my main board post*
A great player for the club 198 games at AFL level is an achievement, not including any of his other accomplishments and his importance to the club.

A sad say, but I'm sure he will be happy to move aside and let another kid get a chance.

Thanks for the effort and work rate Ben and good luck into the future champ! :thumbsu:

/takes hat off.

Re: Matthews retires

Was there a press conference or an article, whats the souce, I want to hear something official :(:(:(

It was mentioned on Channel 10 news tonight that he told the team before training tonight. I wouldnt think they would hold a press confrence but i would guess a statement would be forth coming if not released already online

Re: Matthews retires

I can tell all of you on here that I'm tearing up right now. I mean, I knew it was coming but... just so gutted.
