Daniher shines in big Bendigo loss

Sandringham was too strong for Bendigo on the weekend as they won comfortably by 70 points in windy conditions at Trevor Barker Oval.​

Bendigo - who welcomed back Tom Hislop from a wrist injury - fought hard all day but could not match the 24 goals kicked by Sandringham.​

​

Bendigo started on the back foot when they conceded the first goal with just 24 seconds on the clock. Sandringham’s dominance continued resulting in a ten-goal quarter, setting a league record for this season.​

​

Bendigo was able to kick two goals through Brent Hartigan and Blair Holmes, with Hayden Skipworth having eight disposals at quarter time. Unfortunately, the quarter saw Bendigo suffer two injuries, Damien Peverill with concussion (fractured jaw), who took no further part in the game and Ali Fahour who received stitches above the eye but went on to play the next three quarters heavily bandaged.​

The Bombers, who had the wind in the second term, started well with Dean Dick applying forward pressure to kick Bendigo’s third goal of the game. Hartigan was again in the play, delivering a pass to Darcy Daniher who kicked another goal for Bendigo. The game evened out with both teams working very hard to gain possession. Daniher goaled with a fantastic snap on the run to bag his second for the quarter. Another goal looked certain for Daniher when he was awarded a free kick, but undisciplined play by the Bomber’s resulted in the free being reversed and Sandringham stealing the goal. The Zebras were still in control of the game with the half time score being 12.5.77 to Bendigo’s 5.4 .34. Shane Valenti won the most possessions for Sandringham and Skipworth the most for Bendigo up to the break.​

Bendigo again started well in the third quarter, this time Jonnie Coghlan and Skipworth scoring goals to keep the Bombers fighting. In a bizarre circumstance, Sandringham kicked a goal when a free was awarded because the Bomber’s runner was inside the fifty-metre arc during a kick in. Goals kept flowing for Sandringham although great persistence by Bendigo resulted in Daniher scoring his third goal. Jarrod Atkinson provided plenty of run out of the backline for Bendigo. The Zebras though, used the wind to their full advantage having seventeen scoring shots for the quarter, with the accountability of Bendigo being the main factor in them being 89 points down.​

In the three quarter time address Hickmont expressed his belief in the team, urging the Bombers to aim for a seven goal quarter.​

Stuart Crameri kicked a long goal from the centre square giving his Bomber’s teammates the motivation to finish off the game. Another long goal was scored, this time coming off the boot of Jason Johnson. This was followed by yet another goal from Daniher (his forth) as he swooped on the loose ball. Josh Bowe found plenty of the ball late in the game and the team managed to produce two more goals to win the quarter, although not the match.​

Final scores were Sandringham 24.15.159 defeating Bendigo Bombers 13.11.89.​

Sandringham’s Shane Valenti was awarded best on ground as his team inflicted a loss on an undermanned Bendigo making it the fourth for the season.​

Skipworth, Daniher, Johnson and Atkinson all performed well for the Bombers and worked tirelessly all day.​

​

With this game being the club’s 100th, Bendigo will be looking to find a victory in their 101st against Frankston in two weeks.​

​

In the reserves clash against Sandringham, Bendigo suffered an 84-point loss.​

​

The Bombers tried hard all day but could not match the top of the table Zebras. Grant Ford and Steven Stroobants kicked two goals each.​

​

Grant Weeks and Corey Wanganeen were among the best players for Bendigo.​

​

Next week the Bombers will continue their search for a first win.​

Seems like a lack of disposals there from everyone except Skipworth, anyone notice this when watching the game?

Wasn't ideal conditions. The thing I like about Darcy the most thus far is his recovery and his 2nd and 3rd efforts after a marking contest.

I reckon he is going to develop into a very valuable player who we can use at either end of the ground.
