Re: Bendigo v Willy review

Kepler will get a game this week. Dosen't deserve it but Sheeds is still coach so he will get a game

Re: Bendigo v Willy review

Keplers presenting and marking in the 3rd quarter in particular was outstanding.

He was plucking everything and more importantly, nailing the goals.

No, doesn't deserve it at all. He only kicked 5 goals

He was also pretty good against Sandringham a few weeks back. Any chance of getting put on the rookie list?

Two blokes who have improved all year and should be at least considered for the rookie list are Plummer and Atkinson. Both look like they have worked hard to improve their fitness and as a result they have continued to improve as the year has gone on.

Ant - who was number 63 for Bendigo. one of the club officials told me he was from the Bendigo area (came up through their reserves I believe).....?? thought he looked pretty good when he came on - he was rotating with Jetta (who I agree did absolutely nothing today and got towelled up by the Collingwood rookie listed Daniel Nicholls). Having said that, wouldnt mind having that young kid on the list - thought he showed Jetta how to play today and apart from Rusling - was one of the Seagulls best.......

I was at the game and my thoughts differ a bit to Ants.

Personally MJ, Keps, Houli, Campo, Heffernan and Bolton absolutey dominated.

MJ - Just a class above VFL made a few silly mistakes but was dominant, played on the wing, had great endeavour and took the dropping with the right attitude. Walked past him at 3/4 time and he was covered in mud and full of scratches and cuts, shows he went in hard. Has to be back next week.

Kepler - Used to be the most anti-kepler guy there was, but having seen him play up forward a few times, one thing is obvious, he is not a CHB. He started pretty ordinarily, but after half time had great intensity, took some really strong pack marks and a few tough contested marks. Has an excellent pair of hands (got hit plenty of times mid air and held the ball all the way to the ground). Once his confidence got up he did some nice one handed pick ups and he has good leadership on the ground telling players where to go. Big mistake to let him go next year, and should be in this week as A FORWARD.

Houli - Classy player who looks like a footballer. Was a bit worried when I saw him outside the ground 20mins before the game (in his essendon jumper I might add). Handballs a bit too much, but with a bit of work over the pre-season he could easily be in our starting 22 next year.

Campo - Just too good for VFL, a bit of an insult he isn't playing in the 1's if you ask me. Started on the ball but moved to the HBF on Brad D*ck in the 2nd half and provided great run and drive. Had the ball on a string, kicked 2 really nice goals, one from the boundary on the wrong side. However, he really impressed me in that yes he got cheap kicks running around the back, but he everytime he was at the next contest almost immediately after he kicked it. I'd expect him to be in the 1's next week.

Heffernan - Had a really good game, again too good for VFL but struggles a bit in AFL. Made 1 or 2 silly mistakes but again would be close to senior selection based on recent form. However, we appear to be playing the kids so he will probably miss out.

Bolton - Same as Heffernan. Kicked 3 goals and took some nice grabs, and to be honest he hasn't been the worst player when he has played in the 1's but may be on borrowed time.

Andrew Lee - Showed some promising signs, took some nice marks and kicked a few goals. Played mainly up forward until the game was in the bag. The forward line of him Neagle and Bradley dominated Williamstown and gelled really well together. Again, looks a footballer and I think we should definately perservere with him.

Jay Neagle - First game back from a long lay-off, this kid looks like he has it. Been critiscised by many, but from what I saw he looks like he is our next FF. Took one massive grab where he beat 6 guys. He has excellent hands, is really hard at it, chases hard, goes in hard and is a nice kick. I would expct him to get a game before the season is over. Kicked 3 and was probably the highlight for me.

Leroy Jetta - Struggled, was heaily tagged and could never get into the game. Played a bit on the ball and a lot up forwad, but the forward line was just too crowded for him to shine. When he did touch it he looked like he was going to doing something, unfortunately he probably touched it 5 times. Can't see him getting another game this year.

Courtney Dempsey - First game back and really dissapointed as I'm a hge fan and he barely did any daring running all day, and never once got to see him dance with the ball. Is very raw, though much bigger than last year and another full preseason and a some consecutive games for Bendigo will do him the world of good.

Heath Hocking - Can't say much more than I like this kid, lets promote him. Hard at it, decent skills, however handballs a bit too much when he owuld be better served kicking it.

Danny Chartres - This guy I liken to a skilled version of Kepler Bradley who is a cross between John Barnes and Sean Wellman. Very skilled for a big guy, and although he is playing the ruck I thnk he could be turned into a CHB. I'd be very tempted to promote him off the rookie list and give him a game since we can't make finals.

Courtney Johns - Saved him for last. I was a huge Johns fan but everytime I've seen him this year one thing keeps hitting me in the face, the guy is gutless. He plays with no passion, and rarely goes in hard. On the weekend the ball was kicked to a 2 on 1, all he had to do was take a few steps back and tak the mark, instead he jumped halfheartedly with one hand and Rusling took the mark right behind him (much like the game Dixon mark against the Hawks). Yes Johns opponent didnt kick a goal but his opponent was rubbish. Johns spent most of the game 5m behind his opponent at all times, never floated across and helped out team mates (as long as his man didnt have it he felt he was doing his job) and in all honesty when we had the ball he may have well not been there. He would be 70m away on the opposite flank calling out for the ball. Personally, I had him as one of our poorer players and think he is a long way off from being AFL standard. Maybe with a new coach and some heart we can nurture the obvious talent he has but at the moment he will be lucky to be there next year.

As for Bendigo listed players I thought Jolley, Maher, Atkinson, Plummer (#50 he is a very good ruckman) and #63 were also quite serviceable. Whilst Weekes did well to kick 3 goals, inlcuding a nice one from the boundary (he is an excellent set shot kick)

Well that's my take on it, and if Bendigo can keep the side they had this math they will comfortably win the flag (Williamstwon were 4 games ahead of us). That said with the side we had we were never going to lose, and in all honesty I think we need to recruit 1 or 2 more decent midfielders this draft as our midfield depth is a bit shallow atm and more importantly we need some backs because our KPP guys were Bendigo VFL players.

Yep also want to say thanks to the guys for the great report, some really promising signs for the future. I just hope the new coach give these young guys a fair chance to play senior footy ahead of some of the older guys who might be down on form.
I know its not going to happen, but I'd love to see Bradley, Houli, Jetta, Neagle, Reimers and Gumbleton all in the seniors together for a game or 2 before seasons end.

Does he kick the ball too high too often?

He has great passing skills by foot when he gets it right, just looks like he rushes a little to often when he kicks, possibly because he still has the habit of looking to handball first and when he does that he either bombs, or kicks too high.

Once he finds a bit of composure that will no doubt come with experience, that class you talk about will shine through.

Hard to disagree although at this stage i dont think it is time to bring him back to the seniors in place of a younger player. He cant play midfield in the seniors like he did on sunday in the VFL.

Agree with all of this. Been saying he was a forward for a long time.

Same as MJ do you promote him in front of a younger player ?

He may get in but it will depend on how well Gumby is going.

Leroy only appeared to be heavilly tagged becasue he wouldnt run anywhere. It was easy to pick him up.Nicholls played on him in the second half and got a heap of the footy running off him.It was not like he was simply sticking to Leroys side. In the first quarter when Hocking was playing on Nicholls he hardly had a touch. Leroy hardly got a touch becasue Leroy wasnt interested.

Well as you said it was his first game back for a long time. The idea on sunday was simply to get through 60 minutes of footy. He did that and got 13 possessions without getting hurt. Thats what they wanted to do.

Look i agree with most of what you have said about Johns but i dont think he is gutless. It is simple. He doesnt work hard enough and he is not fit enough.
This is why he jogs around most of the game .
Now as far as his opponet goes you are saying that Ben Ried pick number 8 in last years draft who has had a few senior games in his first year is rubbish ? I would suggest you learn a bit more about the opposition before you pot them ;)

I am well aware Ben Reid went #8, they could have done better with that pick. As for Johns I don't understand why people cut the guy slack when he is lazy and unmotivated but when Leroy is similiar everyone gets stuck into him. Also I think Leroy struggled because our forward line was so tall and so congested, their wasn't much space and in fact all he really did was lead up on the flank, which was not where the ball went.
Also I did not realise Dempsey had so many touches, just curious as to where you got the stats from and if you could provide any other players stats?
Finally, just wondering if anyone knows whats happened to McKinnon as Chartres and #50 (Plummer?) have been playing instead (I think Plummer is quite a decent ruckman).

McKinnon has injured his shoulder again.

Dempsey was quiet, but that's almost to be expect considering the lay off he has had this season.

I think you have a point on Jetta, there weren't a lot of crumb balls on offer. Seemed to enjoy the freedom of playing up the ground a little more.

Big fan of Plummer's work myself.

McKinnon actually dislocated his knee during a ruck training drill ;)

For a start how much slack did i cut Johns ? I mentioned he kept making the same mistakes , letting his man lead up 5 meters in front of him and wandering around the ground like a slow moving river.Just becasue i mentioned a few things he did right it didnt mean i was saying he was one of our best.If you read my last reply i said i agreed with most of what you said about Johns.

I got stuck into Leroy because he didnt run. You say he was crowded up forward and there wasnt any crumbs and he lead up the flank ok. What about letting his opponent run off up the ground countless times and getting possessions through the midfield? Leroy didnt chase him once.

Is he fit ant?

From your training reports he seems to be on a modified program most likely due to his dodgy groins. If he is still struggling to run then i'd suggest we put him in cotton wool until pre-season. Playing him now achieves nothing.

Providing he can't do further damage, then playing footy is always the best option.

Experience playing again men, even at VFL level is vital for his development.

I take it that was after he re-injured his shoulder.

He injured his shoulder a number of weeks ago didnt he? All i know was he was set to play against Sandy a couple of weeks ago but hurt his knee at the end of the wednesday training run when he was doing some ruck drills. We spoke to him after training that night when he was leaving on crutch's. Also spoke to him at the Sandy game where he confirmed he had dislocated his knee and would miss the rest of the year.

would you expect him to remain on the rookie list ant???

will they have to redraft him because of the 2 year rule

He injured his shoulder a number of weeks ago didnt he?

I don't know.

To be honest, I've pretty much wiped him an EFC player and haven't taken much notice.

Was meeting with a client in Puckle Street a few weeks ago and saw him with his arm in a sling, just presumed it was the same injury.

would you expect him to remain on the rookie list ant???

They'd either have to promote him or redraft him.
I don't see either happening.

Not sure if they would promote him. If they are still interested i think they can risk dropping off the list and then taking him again in the rookie draft.
