What where peoples impressions of Greg Bentley on Friday night?

I thought he played ok, without being outstanding.

Deserves another game.

What do others think?

Dint use the ball very well, a lot of rushed long kicks...having sid that he ran hard and got his fair share. Definitely a pass mark.

I wasn't entirely impressed. For the first half of the game I didn't realise who he was and was thinking that he didn't seem very interested in playing footy. I think he doesn't have the edge that the rest of our team has.

Can't kick did run hard got into alot of space and didn't use it with minimal pressure at times not what we need on the other hand Johnson played well 12 touches and %100 effiecenty I belive.

His kicking is no good, to me he didn't seem to have the intensity. I don;t see him as part of the 22 maybe good backup but that's it.

He's here nor there. Saw him early make a few turnovers but played alright after the half. Don't know what to make off him just yet. Obviously not in our best 22.

Nothing more than a depth player. Both Hadley and Bentick remain ahead of him when fit.

Spot on BD. Our playing list is a little different to what it was 3 years ago when we really started taking the draft seriously. We have been able to recruit a number of quality youngsters, while at the same time picking up Judd, Warnock & Stevens (he came a bit earlier than 3 years ago).

With the development of our youngsters (& we continue to add quality youngsters via the draft), we are in a position to use later picks in the ND, plus PSD picks & rookie picks on slightly more mature bodied players eg Armfield, Bentley, Johnson, Jamison, Hadley. Not all of these players are being recruited to be walk-up starts in our 22, rather they are being recruited to ensure that we can allow an O'Keeffe, a Tiller, or even a Garlett, to spend as much time as needed developing at the Bullants, rather than being rushed into the seniors if we encounter injuries.

Typically, post 2001, we have thrown a lot of younger players to the 'wolves' due to the lack of depth on our playing list. If we are going to have an extended period at the top end of the ladder, we need to make sure our young players are not playing more senior football than their body can handle in the early stages of their careers. Even last year, Matty Kreuzer should not have played 20 games, but our lack of ruck depth dictated otherwise.

Bentley is unlikely to play many AFL games at Carlton, but a player of his age (22 in April) & body size (187cm & 88kg) is handy to have as a fall back should injuries occur, allowing O'Keeffe, Tiller, Garlett etc to be developed naturally, instead of having to be fast-tracked into the seniors.

He was solid, a few kicks that weren't great but something he can improve on. Didn't a look all that fast but he is by no means slow. Is a strong bodied type and is worth giving a go I think.

For mine he seemed to err on the side of over-kicking and overestimating the closing speed/distance of the leading player....perhaps just over-cautious of turning the ball over. Does have a slightly awkward kicking action though.

On the basis Ratts instructed Hughes not to draft anyone who can't kick.........I wonder why we got him? He certainly looks strong and tough but I did see him slack off a few times in regard to chasing a player and didn't keep the pressure on them. Not a good look.
He'd want to improve on his kicking and chasing a fair bit before I'd put him in front of Browne, Armfield, Johnson, Grigg & Hadley.

I think that most of you are being a bit too harsh on Bentley, to be honest.

Look, we all knew that he wasn't/isn't going to be a world beater, and he didn't do anything to make us think otherwise. But I liked his game.

He knows how to find the ball. His disposal has been criticized a fair bit by most of you and it was a major reason why he is no longer at Port Adelaide, but it really wasn't that bad. It isn't a particularly good looking kicking action, and he doesn't always hit targets, but most of his kicks aren't far off and don't hurt us that much going the other way. Of course this is an area he could improve a whole lot in but it isn't as if he's building on something that isn't there already.

I like what he has to offer. He's a little bit older than most rookies and has been in an AFL environment for a few years now. He knows what happens and the work he needs to do to make it. He has a stronger body so I see him as somewhat of an insurance policy if Hadley's body doesn't stand up and if other injuries take their toll.

He probably won't ever be a best 22 player for us heading forward but there really is no reason why he can't make it as a decent depth player.

I'd like to see him in a more high tempo game before making a judgement. He seemed to be a lot slower than the rest of our guys and kicked a lot of long balls to contests.

He has some work to do, but he looks to have a solid body and had no trouble getting his hands on it (16 possesion game is respectable, 8 kicks, 8 handpasses, 75% efficiency, 1 goal), so the rest will come. There are a number in front of him at the moment (and we have a lot of depth now) but he showed some glimpses.
