South Melbourne/Sydney:

B: Herriot
HB: Clegg
C: Skilton
HF: Nash
F: Lockett

Sydney alone:

B: Dunkley
HB: Roos (could just put Goodesy there for the hell of it though)
C: Kelly
HF: Hall
F: Lockett

Danny Frawley
??
Robert Harvey
Darrell Baldock
Tony Lockett

CHB Roberts, Maybe move Frawley to CHB as he was capable of it and put Howell at Fullback.
Baldock gets done by Riewoldt, also not sure Baldock was a CHF he was only short, not even 6 ft?

Frawley/Howell
Roberts
Harvey/Stewart (cant split)
Riewoldt
Lockett

What about Timmy Evans!?!

Yeah, for sheer weight of runs on the board you probably have to give it to him, but Hodges was an absolute freak (SANFL single season record, Magarey, multiple finals and Grand Finals won off his boot).

Bruce Doull played CHB quite a lot for Carlton despite being 185cm. Was named at CHB in the 72, 79 and 81 grand final wins.

Silvagni/Southby
Doull
Williams/Jesaulenko
Kernahan/Walls
Fevola/Kernahan

Edit:

With Jezza effectively playing almost every position on the ground, and as a full forward for the most part in 1970 and our only ever goalkicking centurion, we could justifiably do this:

FB: Stephen Silvagni
CHB: Bruce Doull
C: Greg Williams
CHF: Stephen Kernahan
FF: Alex Jesaulenko

Considering that 4 of the 5 made the team of the century and one is considered one of the great skippers of all time and has the most ever goals for a Carlton player, that spine has to go close to the best ever.

B: M. Michael
HB: J. Leppitsch
C: M. Voss
HF: J. Brown
F: A. Lynch

Don't even pretend there was one better than that.

Or we could just fast-forward to next year:

B: D. Merrett
HB: M. Clark
C: S. Black
HF: J. Brown
F: B. Fevola

Hawthorn's 1986 spine has it well and truly covered....

Langford
Mew
Wallace
Brereton
Dunstall

John Heriot was a very good player, but i'd have 'Gentleman' Jim Cleary or Fred Goldsmith at FB

For mine:
Langford
Mew
Matthews
Brereton
Dunstall

Was Matthews a centreman?

For mine:
Langford
Mew
Matthews
Brereton
Dunstall

Is everyoe forgetting knights.

Langford
Knights
Matthews
Brereton
Dunstall

Cant see how any other club could beat that. Sub Hudson for dunstall, platten for matthews or mew for knights and u dont lose much.

J. Regan
A. Collier
N. Buckley
P. Carman
G. Coventry

I thought I might do it since nobody has posted one yet.

Carman gets in on ability, even though he didn't play alot of games.

As I said in the OP, its definately out of North, Carlton and Hawthorn.

with a strong case for each one.

From Norths perspective,

they have 2 brownlow medalists

the best player of the modern era.

Cable won 3 sandovers, 5 Simpsons (Norm Smith equiv), and won 8 B&F's in sides that won 5 flags (3 Perth, 2 North), and was pipped for the brownlow.

And Dench

Who?? Cable? Cable was an absolute gun but you might be the only person that considers him the best player of the modern era.

Geoff Southby
Bruce Doull
Barry Armstrong
Robert Walls
Alex Jesaulenko

That spine played together in the 1972 Grand Final.:thumbsu:

Carlton slotted Nicholls into the pocket and kicked a record score for a Grand Final.

Armstrong is the only real "weak link", but is a two time premiership player and a member of Carlton's hall of fame.

Regan (2 Flags)
Albert Colier (29' Brownlow, 6 Flags)
Whelan (39' Brownlow, 2 Flags)
Todd (327 goals from 75 games, 2 Flags)
Coventry (1299 Goals, 5 Flags)

Started in the 37' GF.

Greg Williams? Brett Ratten? Stephen Kernahan?
