Best banner ever?

What's the best banner you've ever seen? Was it the catchy slogans, the amazing artwork or the really lame poetry? Or did it trip up the opposition's centre half forward?

Some of those massive Hawthorn Grand Final banners of the 80s had pretty sensational artwork, but for mine, you cannot beat a cool slogan. The best I've seen would have to be the North Melbourne banner the night the Bears played their first game on a Friday night at the G in 1987:

Say goodbye to that sunshine sky
Cos tonight Bears, you're gonna die

Simple, elegant, very cool. Didn't intimidate the Bears, however, who won easily. Oh well.

One of Fitzroy's last banners was the best

Apparantley that word on the last line was meant to be 'fooled'

The best had to be Fitzroy's last game at Victoria Park against the Pies. It went along the lines of:

SEDUCED BY NORTH
r*ped BY BRISBANE
F***ED BY THE AFL

It got a standing ovation from the whole crowd, and was one of the funniest banners I ever saw. Mind you I didn't even agree with the second line!

Maybe some of our deluded ex Fitzroy loving BEAR's supporters were involved in it's collaboration.

Richmond a couple of years ago had just three words:

"ROAR IS WAR"

I thought thats the best banner I've ever seen, but on the back the banner began with:

"Finally the Tigers have returned to the MCG..." but I couldn't read what the rest of it said, because the team ran through it.

I think it could have been the same week The Rock was doing a WWF Promotional visit in Melbourne.

Going back a few years now when the night premiership was played. I can't remember which year it was (I know I was only a kid) but Sydney won the night premiership and they were carrying on about it no end.

As it happened the first match they had to play after that was against Carlton.
In typical Carlton arrogance their banner read: "You galahs, even Collingwood win premierships at night"

Actually, they believe that hostages can sometimes form a sympathy with their captors after prolonged exposure.

Central Districts vs Norwood, mid 1990s, a semi final. Norwood were wearing lycra guernseys for a few years. The Doggies banner:

"It's been years since we've won a final
At least we don't wear pooncey vinyl"

In the '88 (or 89?) GF, Hawthorn's banner was of a washing line filled with hawks jumpers with their premiership years as the numbers. There was a lady taking them off the line, and the caption simply read "bring 'em home to mama". This has always stuck in my head as an example of simple but very effective banner design.

The old Hawthorn ones in the 80's that used to cover the entire length of the old Southern Stand. I remember one that was a take off of the Man From Snowy River that was exceptionally good.

I remember a banner Essendon had in the mid 80s playing the Saints.

cjwalkey i remember it wells, the hawkers vs our roys in the 83 qualifying final. it was a banner that ran the length of the southern stand concrete wall at the front of the top deck, pre-advertising. a 60/70/early 80s tradition. though i dont barrack for the hawks i thought it was a corker:

There was movement at the station
As the word had passed around
That the mighty Brown and Yellow
Were storming through the town
The fans they came to worship
The gods they came to cheer
For they all knew the story
That this is Hawthorn's year.

Bloody brilliant whoever wrote it.

my other fave was the Carlton GF banner from '81 versus Collingwood:

We've come to see them big
We've come to see them tall
We've come to see Carlton
The greatest team of all.

thought that was a corker too....

ALSO thought the Brissie Lions GF banner from last year was good too. The traditional GF banner is mostly about bragging rights. Ours mentioned the respective Roys/Bears by giving both 'teams' a mention by using a couple of lines from the theme song. Good work from the Lions cheer squad. Understated, respectful.

I thought it was funny, but the thrashing North got later was funnier!

They picked the wrong year to put that up!
