1980s for me.
It was the decade of the majority of my childhood, and when - I think like most of us - I was most obsessed by and in love with the game.
And of course, as a Hawk supporter it is an easy time to remember fondly.
The game was higher scoring and far more attacking in that era than now, and there were a lot of all time greats who played in the 80s (as there are in any era really).

90's - hard and tough players, who copped a bump or hit and got up and fought on.
We had true champions of the game.
Umps would shut up and let the game flow on..
Could argue it's the 80's into the 90's that was the period of fantastic footy.

The 1980's. 3 high quality state leagues without money ruining everything, all attack and no defence, high scoring matches, State of Origin at its zenith and just the right level of violence.

I was half thinking 90s but then remember State of Origin from around '83 to '87, VFL v WAFL v SANFL.

So my decade is '83 to ' 93. We got to see the two phases of Ablett Snr's career, the lighter, breathtaking winger / centreman/ flanker and his first season as a heavier stay at home full forward [127 goals in 17 games) with Godra and Dunstall also tonning up.

The super Hawthorn side, 8 gf's in 9 years for 5 flags. The introduction of both WCE and the Bears. The change to the AFL in 1990, the early 90s dominance of that WCE side. That hard slog through winter through the cricket square mud, to the sunny finals in spring on fast tracks.

So many brilliant footballers in that period and SOO at it's peak.

Always liked watching a champion full forward.. look at the goalkicking leader board from the early 90s

There is a unique little record in that list of 1993 goalkickers that a lot of people don't know about. 1993 is the only time in AFL/VFL history where three players from the same team kicked over 60 goals in a season. What made it a more amazing feat was the fact that it was only a 20 game (22 round) season, the first time since about 1970 that each team only played 20 games

These days we get excited when one player for our team kicks 50-60 goals in a season but in 1993 North Melbourne had Longmire kick 75.29 from 20 games, Adrian McAdam kick 68.43 from 17 games and Wayne Carey kick 64.44 from 19 games.

And Mark Roberts kicked 47.14 from 21 games.

As for the OP's question, it has to be the 1990's for me, not only because North Melbourne were competitive for most of the decade and won two premierships, but because the games were more exciting, we had some of the all-time great full forwards and CHF's which meant the games were more offensive and high scoring and it was when the game started to become more professional and the coaches started to adopt some of the more interesting game plans, such as the famous Pagan's Paddock.

Even tho Cats had no ultimate success in that period - the football across the board was far more exciting - theyd bounce the ball to start the game and they were straight into it

My favourite neutral games - were those Ade Crows - Sunday twilight games at FOOTBALL pARK , when Champagne Tony was playing FF - they were must viewing and so exciting , and there were plenty of games like that

Todays football is a yawn
