rooloungers,

I'm moving house and as such need a new ISP.I am just wondering if some of you more net savvy and wallet stingy folk can point me in the direction of some hidden gem ISP deals. Faster and more reliable the better.

any advice on the matter appreciated.

What did you have before? I've got Telstra Cable Broadband, 12GB. I paid only $29.95 for the first nine months & $59.90 from then after.

I don't know too much about this, but I've been told not to get the Fusion plan from Optus. Supposedly uploads count towards the monthly limit, then you get excess usage fees, but the killer is that the internet speed doesn't slow down till you're 2gig past the limit. So if you haven't been checking your usage for the month...

Mate, i was with optus for 4 years. They are the worst company to get Broadband from is my opinion of them.

We have Optus, and when you go over the limit it immediately slows you down. Upgrading to the next limit is really easy (as we discovered this month - new computer, huge amount of updates for reinstalled software, over limit, ouch).

I had friends on Telstra. One emailed a photo of her new dog (Ok dumb) to another friend, but got the email address wrong. She sent it on a Friday afternoon. They went away for the weekend. On Monday mid morning, they got a polite phone call from Telstra to inform them that their internet bill had just topped $1,000. (I am not making this up). The picture had been bouncing in and out of her email account all weekend, and had decimated their download limit, triggering higher and higher charges.

So I don't know who you should go with, but I'd go with whoever slows you down, rather than just increasing the charges (which Telstra does)

We bundle ours with Foxtel, which helps.

I had that problem with Optus. When i first became a member of optus Broadband, I went over my Mb limit & they Locked my account for the rest of the month & i had to pay $200 to reactivate the account. After that they changed the rules & instead of locking accounts they just limit the speed if you happened to go over you limit.

With Telstra if you pass your Mb limit your account also gets limited speed so maybe what happened to your friend was a while back when it was still primitive.

I was paying $52 a month with Optus for only 2Gb worth of use.

Whats your plan KL?

Thanks guys,

keep it coming others.

Presently with Australia online 256k, 39.90, 10GB limit, after that its down to speed of 64. they have been really reliable. so i may just stick with them at the new place. ive heard nothing but bad things from optus and telstra users.

I changed over from Bigpond to Primus on the basis that nothing would go wrong in the transition. I was assured it was a no-brainer.

Well, everything went wrong, from Bigpond cancelling my account days before Primus were ready to switch me over, to Primus not recognising my Bigpond-approved modem (forcing ME to get into the guts of the computer and change all these settings).

After much angst in the early days everything is fine now (touch wood).

I pay about $40 per month and they warn me on the rare occasions that I get close to my download limit. In fact, they start warning me at 50%.

You have a pretty sweet deal there. I would keep it if i was you.

Im with optus.

Pay $69 a month. In that price i get 60 gig to dl a month. 20 on peak and 40 of peak.

I would recomend the plan that TPG have.

There is really no way you can exceed the download limits, its faster then broadband, it is really good for money value.

Just my 2 cents.
