Well, you may have noticed there have been one or two (or 50,000) discussions of the MVP race.
I thought I would put a thread together for our awards. We can complete the voting the same way as the media and see how it compares to the (lol) experts.
So, send me your votes (or you can place them in here). Only the votes that match the criteria will be counted. You don't have to vote on all the awards. If you feel you don't know enough, then don't vote in that category.
If you want me to update OP with some stats about a particular award. Go ahead. I know more about Warrior players, so expect a better review on them. I'll update any of the other players.
MVP
Voters need to give their top 5. First person listed is your first pick, 2nd person picked is who you think should finish 2nd etc
Leading Candidates:
1) R Westbrook - Pros - Just in case you didn't know, he averaged a triple double. 31.6/10.7/10.4. Led the league in scoring, PER, Box P/M and VORP. Cons - It's not really a con, but his team only won 47 games. A good achievement, but typically a lot lower than most MVPs. His usage rate was an all time high. Not known for his defense.
2) J Harden - Pros - Moved to point guard and was sensational - Averaged 29.1/11.2/8.1. Led the league in assists, Offensive Win shares and win shares. Team won 55 games which, while better than Westbrook, is still low on a typical MVP. Cons - not known for his defense either, set a record for most turnovers in a season.
3) K Leonard - 25.5/5.8/3.5. Great numbers, but not compared to RW and JH. Pros - by far the best defensive of the MVP candidates. Very efficient 48.5/38.1/88.0 shooting - much better than JH and WB. Team won 61 games. Perfect for an MVP candidate. Cons - As mentioned before, his numbers don't match up to the RW and JH.
4) L James - 26.4/8.7/8.6. Once again, great numbers, but not compared to RW and JH. Pros - much more efficient 54.8/36.3 from the field. Cons - 51 wins for the team is a poor return. Free throw percentage of 67.4% is poor.
Other candidates - I Thomas (28.9/5.9/2.7), Durant (25.1/8.3/4.9 - though missed 20 games)
Coach of the Year
Voters need to give their top 3. First person listed is your first pick, 2nd person picked is who you think should finish 2nd etc
Leading Candidates:
1) Mike D’Antoni, Houston Rockets - Turned them around from a 8th seed to a 3rd seed with an offense that will probably change the game.
2) Scott Brooks, Washington Wizards - If this was based on games after November, he might be a monty. After a terrible start, he got the Wizards up to the 4th seed.
3) Erik Spoelstra, Miami Heat - I feel his chances of winning this went out the window when they didn't make the playoffs. But the fact this no name team almost did is amazing.
4) Gregg Popovich, San Antonio Spurs - A team that lost it's heart when Duncan retired last season goes on and wins 61 games.
5) Steve Kerr, GSW - You don't just win 67 games. Had to work in an all time talent into a well oiled machine. First world problems I know, but still...
Other candidates - Quin Snyder, Utah Jazz
Defensive Player of the League
Voters need to give their top 3. First person listed is your first pick, 2nd person picked is who you think should finish 2nd etc
Leading Candidates:
1) Draymond Green - There were concerns when Bogut left there would be problems on the defensive end for the Warriors. Warriors finished either 1st or second in every major defensive stat this season. He led the league in steals, finished 2nd in defensive win shares, 2nd in defensive rating, 1st in defensive box P/M and 12th in blocks. Known for his ability to defend all 5 positions.
2) Ruby Gobert - Led the league in blocks and defensive win shares. Also finished 3rd in defensive rating. Plays like an old school center that feels like he owns the paint.
3) Kawhi Leonard - 2 time DPOY dropped back from his last two seasons, but that doesn't mean much as he was miles in front of everyone anyway. 6th in defensive win shares, 9th defensive rating and 8th in steals. Led the Spurs to the best defensive ranking in the league.
Rookie of the Year
Voters need to give their top 3. First person listed is your first pick, 2nd person picked is who you think should finish 2nd etc
Leading Candidates:
1) Joel Embidd - He's the best rookie. No question. It's just whether you feel like 31 games played is enough
I'm happy to take some help on the other candidates...
6th Man of the Year
Voters need to give their top 3. First person listed is your first pick, 2nd person picked is who you think should finish 2nd etc
1) Eric Gordon - Ended up only coming off the bench for 60 games. May hurt his cause. Instant offense @ 16ppg. Shoots a lot of 3s (8.8 per game).
2) Lou Williams - Another instant offense guy @ 17.5ppg. Led 6th men in ppg.
3) Andre Iguodala - Not much of a stats machine. Does it all. Elite defensively and I feel must be a sneaky chance for all nba defensive team even though he comes off the bench. 1st player ever to lead the league in assist/TO ratio off the bench
Other candidates - Greg Monroe, Patty Mills, Zach Randolph
All NBA Teams
3 teams to pick. 2 guards, 2 forwards and 1 center on each
Leading Candidates
Guards - Westbrook, Harden, Curry, Thomas, Paul (missed 20 games), Lowry (missed 22 games), Derozen, Lillard, Thompson, CJ McCollum, Irving, Wall, Conley (missed 13 games), Beal, Walker (good luck picking only 6!)
Forwards - Leonard, LeBron, Durant (missed 20 games), Butler, Antetokounmpo, Green, Griffen (missed 21 games), George, Hayward.
Center - Davis, Cousins, Towns, Jokic, Gobert, Jordan
I'm sure I'm missing someone. Let me know...
